Some 3-29 MBB Recruiting Notes

I understand the concern and think it's valid, but how do you know we don't really like him?

Well, I imagine we like him a lot more than the other options we have at this point in the recruiting process. I mean where the heck did this guy come from? It just seems like well Wilkins looks like a question mark, and so does clyburn so lets reach a little on someone. At least we know he will sign with us. I have a feeling a big 12 school even a bad one is better than playing for the others schools he has offers from.

we started recruiting him late didn't we? if we really liked him, i think we would have been recruiting him a lot sooner.

How would any of us really know when we started recruiting him? It could be more late than early, but mostly due to having a scholarship that we hadn't anticipated. I doubt the first time his name came up amongst the coaching staff was in the past month, but I could be wrong.

true, but we didn't try to get him signed during the early signing period so we don't like him as much as ejim or phillips. I'm sure Barnes has been on Mac's radar that long but it seems to me that we are recruiting him harder as of late. He also wasn't asked to visit earlier, or even during the basketball season.

Again, how do you know all of this? And let's say that were the case do we know why? We didn't want him or maybe we didn't have a scholarship available?

I want a player who wants to win so bad that they will attempt to take over a game rather than sit around and hope someone else will do it. Are there any of those out there. We have a lot of talented players, now lets get one that will make the difference in a game.

We had one of those this year. His name was Craig Brackins. Unfortunately, no one told Brackins that he lacked the skill set to take over a game by himself, which was one of our biggest problems on the season. We'd get down and Brackins would start firing it up from everywhere, missing more often than not, and we'd fall farther behind.

they are assumptions, but i guess it just seems like we had every other signed recruit, or future recruits in for games this year, why would he be the only one who didn't.

Also, we hear about recruits more often than we don't and this guys name just popped up. I hope he is good, but i have my doubts.

Khaal has a valid point that a lot of us are merely guessing what went on when we actually don't know.

That's fine, and who knows, you could turn out to be completely correct on how his recruitment has gone. I would just prefer to avoid making assumptions fact based on how well they fit our opinions.

I found out about Bo Barnes mid to late February...That was also the first time the staff saw him in person. Not sure when they started recruiting him.

yea i do understand none of us really know what was going on behind the scenes, but i am just assuming that he is another reach recruit just like the majority have been under mac.

Well if he is a high major prospect what stops high majors from recruiting him? I don't think you can consider Duquesne and Evansville or the other schools he has offers from high majors. It just seems like a wasted scholarship to me. why not wait until we can get someone we really like instead of just scrambling to find someone to fill a scholarship with because that is what it looks like we are doing.

Here at Iowa State we have plenty of scholarships that open up every year so I'm not too worried about "wasting" one.

if barnes is just another lucca or eikmeier, i would rather bank the schollly for next year when we can put it to better use.

by lucca or eik i mean a one dimensional scorer who can't get to the paint off the dribble, or have a struggle to get your shot off with good defense. we need guards who are hard to guard, not so one dimensional.

I agree for the most part. Staiger was one of those players who needed to be either less one-dimensional* or strictly one-dimensional. If his strength was 3-point shooting but he had little else, he would have worked best in 2 ways
1. as a good 6th/7th man who could come in and jack a few long-range bombs and rejuvenate the team.
2. as a pure SG on a team with a creative point guard and a couple of go-to scorers.

In either case, his defensive liabilities hurt with more than 20 minutes of playing time, on average.

* I know, "less than 1 dimensional" sounds like zero dimensions (or the empty set). I meant "multi-dimensional." You do the math.

I heard Clyburn is leaning towards signing with Saint Louis anyone else hear this? I think he could be big time under the radar steal if we could snag him.

Ugh. Not wanted I wanted to hear. We have tons of playing time available for a 3, so we really should be able to land one who is at MCC and knows ISU well.

Of course, Clyburn in the one who played with Buckley in high school, right? Buck transferring probably didn't help our chances. But still, St. Louis? We have to be able to beat them for recruits, especially from Iowa Jucos.

St. Louis actually has a good coach that has improved the team during his time there. ISU can not say that.

We beat St. Louis...good logic.

Early in the season. Which team is still playing now and which team ended with a winning record? Also, you are saying then that K-State has a worse program and worse coach than ISU, correct?

Great post though yours always make me laugh. What color socks is Coach McD wearing today?

What conference is St. Louis in again?
