Iowa State finished the regular season with a record of 15-16, 4-12 with tenth place in the Big XII

Iowa finished the regular season 15-16, 5-13 with tenth place in the Big Ten

The two teams seem comparable on paper...I'm wondering if one might jump out and be better next year or are both going to stay in their respective conferences basement?

Not sure about Iowa, but for ISU it is Brackins staying, Gillstrap being a stud, Colvin or Buck being a difference maker at PG or DG really stepping his game up, and if the juco big comes to ISU him being a difference maker as well. ISU could have a complete different look to it next year if 2 commits and the JUCO player all end up in Ames, with Brackins.

But yet if you were to listen to KXNO, Iowa is head and shoulders above ISU. I guess Dennis Green was wrong and you aren't what your record says you are.

The Iowa State/ Iowa rivalry will be decided by who the home team is for a few years. Our fans will have too much energy at that game to allow the Hawkeyes to win, regardless of how bad our team is.

Iowa will be much better than ISU, even if ISU has Brackins.

They were 15-16 without their star player most of the second half of the season. Tucker is the best scoring guard in the state.

ISU needs to have about 100 things go right next year to be decent.. Brackins to stay, Colvin and Gilstrap to come AND be flat out amazing. We need DG to develop a jumpshot, Lucca to get some ball handling and have either Pomlee or Hamilton really step their games up.

Why not wonder if both are going to make an improvement?

Are you implying that Tucker is/was the star of the team?

Yeah I'm not sure what you take is here but Gaitens imo is the best player for Iowa. I'm also not sure he has a real high ceiling since he is already so physically strong but he might have been the best freshman in the big 10 this year and you can bet TL is building his program around him.

Did you forget :jimlad:?

If Brackins stays, there is no doubt we are the better team. Losing Tate is really going to hurt Iowa. Kelly is a good player, Gatens is solid, and Tucker is pretty good.

But Brackins is great, DG will be solid, if Gilstrap does come, I fully expect him to be better than anyone we have now minus Brackins. With Ham developing another year, and the additions of Colvin, Christopherson, and Pomlee, we will be better

Iowa will have solid guards but a huge huge hole down low. I don't know who on there team would guard Brackins

I honestly believe that the talent levels on both Iowa and ISU on the floor at the end of the year were pretty even.

The huge difference for Iowa though was that their stud, Jake Kelly, had the ball in his hands all the time and was a playmaker for everyone else on the team. He could drive at will and either score at the rim or kick it to an open teammate. That is HUGE!

ISU's stud was down low with Craig Brackins. Problem is... he doesn't always have the ball, and in fact if the opposing team doubles on him... it's very hard to even get him touches. ISU desperately needs a Jake Kelly type player. Hopefully either Colvin, Gilstrap, or Christopherson can provide that?

I do think ISU has better talent coming in next year than Iowa does though.

I disagree. With Brackins returning and assuming Gilstrap is a starting-caliber wingman, ISU will be a much better team next year. That's 2 things, not 100. ;)

If Colvin or Buckley can legitimately start at the point and move Garrett/Staiger to the off-guard position, we will be an NCAA caliber team.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. While his absence played a key role in many of the close losses, Iowa was in position to win every one of those games, without him in the lineup. Tate's absence forced Cole to step up, and he did big time down the stretch. Cole might be a bit shorter than Tate, but he's a more physical presence down low than Tate ever was. If Palmer can get himself out of the doghouse he seems to be in, Iowa could have an effective 1-2 punch down low.

Kelly is a stud, as he has proven over the 7 games. Gatens is one of the best freshman in the conference and is only going to get better. With pretty much all of the teams minutes returning next year, I would expect Iowa to be much better.

I think they'll be comparable. Brackins will be better than anybody they have, but I would LOVE to have Gatens, Tucker, and Kelly. Those three can flat out play and would start for us next year IMO. I'd also like to have Cole just to have somebody with some thickness.

We'll both be improved, I expect to win at home next year, but I think they'll be just short of the NCAA tourney.

Seeing as how Iowa only has one scholly available for next year, this should be a given.

Expect to see a lot of Cole inside with Brommer/Cougill rotating in with him. When Iowa played two big men inside, their game stepped up HUGE.

Brackins is a stud, no doubt. But Kelly has become Iowa's version of Brackins, and has been a HUGE star for this team. Both Iowa and ISU have a guy that they can really lean on right now, assuming both are back next season.

The two teams should be pretty even next year. If Iowa is healthy, I'd expect them to finish with a better record. Nothing to base that on, just being a homer :)

Tucker, Gatens, Kelly, and Cole are going to be a solid core group next season, and I'm finally excited for basketball!
