Looking into getting one this winter. Anybody have any experience/recommendation? I briefly looked at the Sports Rack by Altrec and liked it.

I recommend getting something that is enclosed. I have a Thule Skybox and it works great. I've never liked the idea of having my bindings exposed to road salt/dirt.

I have just the simple slider ones and it works great, but the enclosed ones are nice because you can always put other stuff in them (socks, boots etc). Don't buy a new one though, you can get nice ones that are barely used on craigslist.

I've used both the Thule skybox and some cheap open air snap on's. Obviously, the Thule was awesome because it was enclosed and big. However, last year when we drove from DM to Colorado with some snap on brackets, they worked perfectly fine. If cost is a big issue and you don't plan on using it very much, I'd go with the cheap open air mounts.

Yakima and Thule are pretty much the be all end all in racks. They make a very soiid product. Pricey but I've been happy with mine.

2nd the craigslist suggestion. Toughest part is finding the right towers to fit your vehicle but you can always buy the towers new and pick up the remaining pieces from CL. Great thing about Thule and Yak is you can pretty much add on any piece you want and it fits.
