Depending on the offense that CPR wants to run (say its more of an air raid type), I really believe one of the names that should be on his list is Sonny Cumbie from Tech.

He was the QB at Tech in 2004 when we beat #4 Cal in the Holiday Bowl. Hes been the only coach (I think) to survive the Leach firing, and the Tuberville exit, and Kingsbury kept him on as "CO-OC" this season, but everyone knows KK calls the plays. He has played/coached for guys like Leach, Neal Brown, Dana H., Kingsbury, and Sonny *****.

He was a walk-on at Tech, and beat out a 5* JUCO recruit in Robert Johnson to QB Tech in 2004, and he has really been a mainstay of the coaching turnover that has taken place in Lubbock. He grew up in Snyder, Texas, and recruited pretty well at Tech, so he obviously has has some pretty good Texas connections. He's a small town guy, with small town values.

He has been around the system since Leach got to Tech in 2000, and played in it, as well as coached the QB's, and WR's.

He hasnt been coaching all that long....really since 2009, but many Tech fans have been thinking he is the one coach we couldnt lose (as well as Lincoln Riley at ECU), during all of the coaching changes.

He is very bright, likeable, and hard-working.

Anyway, just wanted to throw a name out there for all of you "fire Mess" guys. And Im also really not sure if any of you guys want to run the air raid.

But, for the ones who do, thats a name that should be on the VERY short list of candidates.

Just some topic for discussion.

I wonder whether the Air Raid would work in Iowa in November. I think that we have to have some running component.

I just can't see CPR hiring a previously successful HC to be on his staff. I don't think he's that comfortable yet.

I'm with you I think Mangino would want too much control for CPR's liking.

Also think Holgerson probably thinks he is too important to come to Ames for 400k to save the offense. He will go somewhere more high profile.

A replacement would have to have strong Texas or Florida connections for recruiting though.

If WVU fires Holgorsen, he's the absolute #1 with a bullet best choice.

Of guys who are on the market right now, today? Gotta be Mangino.

Holgorsen would be a great "get" but I dont see any way that ISU pulls soemthing like that off. Mangino I could sort of see (he is out of a job and probably wants in pretty bad) but Im not sure CPR seems like the type to have an "abusive" coach on his staff.

Edit: I guess Mangino is currently employed, still not sure either Holgo or Mangina is a good fit for ISU.

I think some people are really setting their expectations a little high.

Do you think Holgorsen would really come here? And Mangino? Being the OC at Iowa State is probably a bottom 20% BCS job. Both DH and MM have a lot of experience and in my opinion will get a lot better job. I hope I am proven wrong, but realistically, I don't think we have much of a shot.

I have been thinking Holgorsen as well, but figured I would be taken to the woodshed for even bringing his name up. I don't know if we can get him for the $ we have paid our OC, but it would be a nice pickup. Mangino would be another as well, but agree with most on CPR not liking his past.

Why do people not think Holgorsen would come here if he finds himself unemployed? He's an Iowa native that knows the Big 12 in and out and clearly likes being in this league. Holgorsen has this "hollywood" persona, but look at the places he's coached. He clearly has no issue with rural/midwestern atmosphere.

Regarding Mangino's past, I don't think CPR can afford those kind of "luxuries" in terms of turning this offense around.

Mangino and Holgorsen are almost guaranteed to fix your offense.
