MLB: Ryno A Candidate for Toronto's Manager Opening

Just imagine if Guillen is actually interested in the Florida job and Sandberg is the next manager on the South Side. It won't happen, but it'd be funny seeing people flip out.

That would be crazy! Maybe Shawon Dunston could be the 3B coach, Jody Davis the hitting coach...bring in Keith Moreland somehow...

Geez...see what growing up with WGN did to me in the 80s! The only baseball on TV during the day...

It would be pretty bad if the Cubs don't give Sandberg the job. Kind of like the Dodgers passing on Scoscia when FOX bought the team, and we've regretted it ever since.

just make him the Cubs' manager and get it over with. If the Cubbies lose him to somewhere else, I want Hendry's head on a stick...

This has been my feeling all along. Plus, if other teams with no affiliation with Ryno are looking at him, he should be a no-brainer for the Cubs. This whole process has already made me hate Hendry more. Ryno going somewhere else would be the boiling point.

Maybe Cito just doesnt want to manage anymore but if he does and the Jays arent letting him, they are painfully stupid. They guy wins to series and then brings them back to some level of respectability in the BY FAR toughest division in baseball.

Oh, and I don't give two craps who manages the Cubs.

I hope he goes there or anywhere for that matter. I hope the Cubs just hire Quade and get it over with. No Ryno.

Are you at all worried that the Cubs are winning pointless games right now? Spring training games and September running out the string games need to be put in context. I'm more worried about this in terms of player evaluation over picking a manager, but still.

I'm not saying that Quade shouldn't get a crack at this thing, right now he'd be my pick. Maybe he's the next Jim Leyland who toiled away in the minors for 20 years before getting a shot at a big league club? The idea that Ryno "knows" the organization and what it's like to be a Cub is wildly overblown in my opinion.

I can't believe I'm typing this, but I agree with you. Quade looks like a slam-dunk, and I'm not Cubs fan. They've been a different team since he took over.

But these games should be for pointless for...the Cubs. Yet, they've beaten teams with plenty on the line.
To get his team, with nothing to play for, excited and putting 100% out there every night speaks volumes for Quade, IMO.

It's not just the record that's been impressive so far. It's the way Quade has constructed the lineups, the way he uses the bullpen and the way he holds players accountable. Not to mention he is great with the media. Ryno probably doesn't know the first thing about talking to the media and one that's as tough as Chicago.

I'm not sold that Ryno is the best guy for the Cubs job right now and I would also hate to see him take it and end up failing and have to boot one of their own to the curb. I think the way the team has played under Quade so far (something like 18-8 I believe) he's making a strong case to keep the job and he's put in many more years in both the minors and on the bench in the majors than Ryno has. Under Quade the Cubs have lost no more than 2 games in a row and went 6-0 in back to back series against the Cards and Marlins which I don't think Lou had any more than a 4 game win streak all season. They've played tough so far this week against the Giants who are battling for a playoff spot and could win that series tonight possibly with Dempster on the mound. They have a 4 game series at San Diego next week too that will play into that division pennent race too.

I think Hendry is waiting to see how Quade finishes the season out and possibly seeing if there is any chance at Girardi too. I don't feel that Ryno is their #1 choice quite yet otherwise they would have just handed him the job by now.

It also doesn't sit right with me that Ryno won't accept being a bench coach with anyone for a couple of years. I don't like how he thinks he's earned the right to just be given a managerial job because he's been in the minor leagues for 4 years.

Literally, they have. Half of their starting line-up spent most of the season in Iowa. Lee, Lilly, and Theriot are not even on the team, Soto is out, and there's probably more that I'm forgetting about. A big part of their success has been Big Z. He seems to have figured something out.

For a good amount of the guys on the team there is plenty to play for. DeWitt, Barney, Colvin, Castillo, Wells, Coleman, Snyder, pretty much the whole pen etc are all young and are trying to play their way onto next year's team. Vets like Baker and Fukudome are trying to carve out a role for next years team. Even Big Z is trying to repair his reputation. These guys have individual motives for playing hard each day out.

There's something to be said for playing free and easy when the result of the game doesn't matter. Like I said, I do think Quade is doing a good job and my concern with these games relates more to player evaluation than the manager. I don't want Hendry thinking that this club could sustain this for an entire season, or that this roster is close to winning a division. It's not. As for Quade, he's no Bruce Kimm, that's for sure.

Sandberg actually has about 15 years of dealing with the Chicago media. Just a few more than Quade.

I do like Quade, but Sandberg has put in his time in the minors, and had a winning record at each level. Not many HOFers would spend a few years in the bus leagues like he has to gain experience.

What I want to know is since when did managing a MLB team become rocket science? If Charlie manual can win a WS it doesn't matter who your manager is. It is about players in baseball more than strategy anymore.

Um, dealing with the Chicago media back in the 80's and 90's is clearly not the same as it is now. Hell, for half of Ryno's career, no one gave a **** about the Cubs. Not to mention having to talk to the media as a player is WAY different than talking to them as a manager.

I agree that a manager can't win you any games but they can certainly lose you them. Something I'm afraid Ryno would do on occasion. Let him get his feet wet with the Blue Jays and then we can hire him in like 5 years.

The thing I have liked about Sandberg's mangerial style down here in Iowa is his willingness to back his players. It is almost Bobby Cox like. Players always like playing for a manager like that. I think part of the problem with Lou was the players were always on pins and needles with him. I do like Quade in that respect as well, because he seems to be a players manager himself, but he certainly didn't show it as much when he was the manager in Iowa as Sandberg has.
