Lots of smoke that Jewel Hampton will undergo season-ending surgery and redshirt.

Big blow to the Hawks who look solid pretty much everywhere else. Expect the backfield to look like a 5-6 headed hydra monster.

That's too bad for the kid. I kind of figured this might happen after reading reports about his initial injury.

The Hawks have done OK with a no-name, running back by committee style before, but this has got to hurt.

Yeah, but they also had Drew Tate under center.

Stanzi has a salty defense to lean on but he's going to have to step up and become this team's leader.

Yeah, that wouldn't make me too confident.

Hey, a question...

I haven't looked too much into it, but is Weinke the backup QB? Are fans worried about what would happen if Stanzi gets hurt?

I know that ISU's Tiller hasn't taken a snap yet, but signs point to him being able to step in and perform if needed. What's the story on the backups at Iowa?

Vandenberg/Weinke are co-back ups. If Stanzi goes down, it's probably Vandy and yes, fans would be worried about a RS FR with no experience taking over.

Hate to say it, but that scenario would probably make the fans that booed Christiansen think twice.

(Please don't read this as me having a desire for Stanzi to get injured. I just felt badly for JC last year...even as a Cyclone fan.)

Surgery on? Lots of things in that region that can be operated on, and also a lot of differences in recovery. Really, really sucks to see him go down.

That will certainly put the pressure on Stanzi. I know the Hawk fans like to say that Stanzi has grown leaps and bounds and is a legit team leading QB but I find that very hard to believe. Without a solid running game, the entire offense is going to have a lot of starts and stops like ISU had under Meyer.

I feel sorry for the kid... but if he had to have this injury... the timing couldn't have been better. He gets to RS and had many weeks of practice with the #1s during his RS year.

I'm not sure I totally agree. Their OL should be one of the best in the country, so Stanzi should have time to throw, and their backs should still be able to get a chunk of yards each carry. They're never going to get blown out of a game because they'll have a top 25 defense in the NCAA. I don't see Stanzi ever having to be a playmaker this year. As long as he doesn't give games away, they'll be fine. If teams put 7 or less in the box, they'll run, and if they put 8 in the box, he's got single coverage across the board.

No defense in the country fears RB by committee. As Van said this morning, you have to have a name. So and so is the guy to stop.

Stanzi may have grown into a good leader, but without "the guy" at tailback, defenses will sit 7 in the box, drop 4 into coverage....which does not bode well for the rest of the offense.

I'm being totally honest here, I would rather have one of the freshmen over JC. He just doesn't have "it" as a D1 QB. He might not even start at EIU. (the real EIU)

Wow, I can't see that.

He would have been a senior, right? You'd take a RS freshman over a mediocre senior QB?

Mediocre is a stretch.

I hate bashing Jake, it's way past time to move on but...

- He can't see over the line

- He can't move like Tate/Banks so that he can see over the line

- He has no accuracy

- He has no touch, it's either in the dirt or 5 feet over the receiver's head

- Every pass is coming in a 100 mph, even the lob to the RB out of the backfield

- He has no pocket presence

So, yes...give me one of the freshmen.

Personally, I'm glad the freshman are the backups rather than Jake. If Stanzi gets hurt this year, this year is pretty much finished as far as a decent bowl goes. Therefore I would rather see the young players with a future get the playing time than a mediocre senior. This same debate happened when Tate was hurt and Manson was playing instead of Jake. I wanted Jake then, and knowing what I know now, I still would. IMO there is no reason to play a mediocre senior QB full time when you're out of the championship hunt and you have the quarterback of the future sitting on the bench. Playing the young quarterback does two things: gives the guy game experience and allows the coaches to decide if he really is the QB of the future or if they need to find someone else.

I suppose, but I'd go with the guy who's won some D1 games, not some HS games. That's just me, I guess.

I understand your position. Its a risk/reward type thing I guess. The risk for Jake wouldn't be as high, but neither would the possible rewards.
