I noticed that on defense, Royce never appears to be "ready." He stands straight up and is easily caught of guard. This is obviously an easy fix for the coaching staff, but one that needs to happen for an NCAA tourney run.

Royce is a great rebounder, and a great offensive player and a great passer. Truly a great player. However, right now he really struggles defending people on the post and in the interior. He is a freshmen though, and to be expected. He will get better, just going to take time.

Royce is a good on ball defender. Off ball he is bad. A lot of it has to do with him being scared to foul

Exactly. He avoids the ticky tack fouls you see called all the time by just staying straight up. We have 0 chance to win if he gets in foul trouble (cough cough Mizzouri)

I wouldn't worry too much about the D. If he weren't stuffing the stat lines in every other categories it would be an issue. The thing I think he can control and improve on immediately is learning to adapt to the refs and staying out of foul trouble early. If he could play 32 minutes a game instead of 25-28 it would help immensely.

I dont know much basketball. Is Royce ready for the NBA? I rarely see him shoot a jump shot? Its always a dunk or bank shot under the basket. I always thought you had to score to play in today's NBA?

QFT. We don't have anyone behind him that has even close to his abilities, mostly because there aren't any other players in the nation with his skillset, so it is more important that he plays straight up defense and avoids fouls.

His size plays as a disadvantage because not only is he called for more offensive fouls, but it makes it easier for defenders to try to bounce off of him and draw a cheap foul.

Why do people always say stuff like that? This is an easy fix, the reason why Final Four teams make it there is because coaches don't let bad defense happen simply because the guy is "good enough." That's what Baylor and Kansas State do. If this team wants something more than a second round tourney loss, then they have to fix these things. Better hedging and switching on defense, better rebounding, and cut down on the empty possessions on offense due to turnovers and awful shot selection.

I think he is afraid that they will call a foul on him all the time because he is a big dude. We need to learn how to pop a screen not go underneath all the time. Help defense is not good as well. Ball, YOU, man, see the floor. A lot to work on to get to that next level.

...because he may have to shoot free throws!

Lot of times he just lets guys post him too easily, lets guys get too deep and get on the block too easily, before putting a body on them. You can keep guys from posting up without fouling. He will get it, there aren't any freshmen that are great defenders.
