I have a Sienna with a roof rack and a need for extra luggage space. Last year I borrowed a hard side carrier and am looking at getting my own for our family vaca this year. I'm not sure I want to pay the 300-600 bucks for the hard side version and I'm also not sure where in the world I would store it the rest of the year. Has anyone had experience with the soft side ones? Obviously my concern would be keeping things dry and wear and tear on it. Any thoughts one way or the other would be appreciated.

I have used a few different versions of the soft side and the only thing I would suggest is to wrap your suitcases or bags in black garbage bags before putting in. Then you don't need to worry about anything getting wet. I bought a very nice one from a garage sale and used it at least 6 times an nothing got wet at all even going through rain storms in Nebraska at night.
We had a soft sided one and after 5-6 long trips it leaked like a sieve. Also, it was noisey and terrible wind drag. After that I bought a rack that fits into hitch reciever and a large waterprooff storage box.
I would get a hard roof top carrier. I have a Sienna too and bit the bullet and bought a Thule. You don't even know it is up there and is very light to store. It attaches in seconds.
