NFL: RIP Wade Wilson

The first thing I think about with Wilson is torching the 49ers in the 87 playoffs. Additionally Tommy Kramer got hurt early in the Saints game the week before and Kramer went to work putting up a bunch of points.
That was a phenomenal win following a strike shortened season. Wade played a fantastic game to lead the Vikings to that upset, completing numerous critical passes to #1 Anthony Carter, who had a career day.

San Francisco, with QB Joe Montana, WR Jerry Rice, and (Davenport's own) RB Roger Craig were an overwhelming favorite that day. They had an air on invincibility in that era, and this game was something of an outlier. Nonetheless, it was thrilling for MN fans, starved for a big win at that point since the Super Bowl years of the 70's.

A NFL historian claims some key 49ers had the flu that day. I scoured the internet for verification and found none. Regardless A.C. had an all time performance, and the Vikings defense showcased serious talent with Doleman, and Millard.

San Fran won their final 3 games 124-7 and Young played QB due to Montana's injuries. Perhaps Montana had rust that day. The 49er ranked 1st in offense & defense, 1st in scoring, 3rd in scoring D. The caveat was the 3 strike game wins/stats were included. Rice did set the TD reception record in 12 games with 22.

During the pre-season Bill Walsh anticipated the strike and replacement games. 49ers camp early on had a ton of players in to get familiar with the system. When called in for the strike games, they had a leg up on the opposition.

Everyone sees 13 win 49ers being toppled by 8 win Vikes. However the "real" team records were 10-2 vs 8-4. Its still a "once a decade" type monumental playoff upset IMO. As for the air of invincibility the perception to fan was there. The Giants had beaten SF in the playoffs in 85/86. 49ers did look like the obvious SB champs in 87 with NY missing the playoffs, Bears struggling without McMahon, and nobody was sold on Washington that year. San Fran was restructuring their team bringing in more physical O-linemen & LBs to match up better with Chicago, New York, and Washington. That transition led to the SB wins the next 2 seasons.

Sat next to Wade on a flight back to Minneapolis during his Vikings days and he was super nice guy. Very humble.
Did get one 'no comment' from him-- when I mentioned Sid Hartmann.
