Red Light Speed Cameras coming to Des Moines

Should be able to lay off some cops then right?

Oh wonderful :jimlad:

Maybe they should raise the speed limit instead. The freeway isnt cramped like it used to be, and aside from about 20-30min on either end of the day, its very much wide open.

The red light cameras don't bother me that much as I don't run red lights but I'm not happy about the speed cameras on 235. It'll just clog crap up.

As someone that does not think 55 has been anything but a suggestion, this could be a significant issue for me on 235...

Indeed, let traffic flow. Its not like theres been big problems with lots of accidents due to speed on 235.. plenty of speeding, for sure, but thats because the speed limit is set way lower than it ever should be, so the vast majority break the limit.

I as well. Its always 50\50 for me whether to take 235 or I-80 from WDM, i think this'll make that decision a bit easier.

If you read the article, it says that there will be a warning sign before each camera. There is no reason to worry if you pay attention and obey the signs on the road which most people should be doing anyways.

Its got to look weird when these are installed. Do people just drive 10-15 over the limit until they see the sign and then speed up again once past? So its really just a virtual speed bump that generates cash. I would imagine that they will bait you in with the signs and then they will start having speed traps 2 miles after them so they can double dip and also catch the drivers that saw the sign and then sped up again.

Thats alright for the stoplights (as long as they dont shorten the yellow, which they do in many cases), but for speeding cameras, i think they really need to reexamine the speed limits in those areas first.

Sorry, guess I was talking about red light cameras, not the speeding kind. :embarrassed:

Its the same general principle for speeding cameras. Put them in areas where the speed limit has just dropped, and is also set at a level way lower than conditions of the road would otherwise dictate, and let the money roll in.

That sounds about right. In Chicago we have tons of the red light variety. If it cuts down on accidents that would be great, but in general it seems like a money maker.

Gee folks. Don't break the law and you will be fine. Not tough at all.

If the laws werent set up in a way to maximize violators (yellow lights too short, speed limits lower than they need to be) then maybe there would be no reason to complain. Its a lot less of a problem if the speed limit is set too low and you're just 'unlucky' if you happen to get pulled over for going what the speed limit should be anyways. With automatic enforcement, EVERYONE gets nailed for an unfair limit, or has to slow down for no real reason
