As a member on HawkeyeReport as well, we've been discussing Iowa's recruting needs as recuiting heats up with the summer camps on the horizon. What are ISU's recruiting priorities???

Are you really planning on taking the opinion of this message board to what the football recruiting priorities might be?

I'm not sure anyone hear could accurately state our real priorities, aside from maybe Chris or a few others.

Funny, I was just putting together a post on that. I hope that you don't mind terribly if I don't give you the credits?

One short answer is that ISU's recruiting priorities depend on whether everyone makes it into school or not--and just who doesn't.

The other short answer is that, even if everyone qualifies, defensive linemen will still be at the top of the list.

Fortunately, it looks (to me ) like--aside from upgrading WR--CPR finally has the program to the point where the most crucial issue is replacing graduation losses (albeit sometimes with upgrades), rather than patching holes.

A good place to be!

Sorry. I'm just not very aware of what your team has coming back and coming up. I figured that the fanbase would have some opinion as to strengths and weaknesses for positions in the next year or so.

Athletic 7' receivers with sub 4.4 speed. A QB with a cannon arm and absolute precision. The 2007-08 New York Giants defensive line.

None of this is based on number's, simply where we need help.

1. Dline-If Pompey makes it that reduces pressure quite a bit but I still think we need at least 2 DTs and 2 DE's due to the losses in the next couple years and the amount of time it will take to develop the athletes we will get.

2. CB-We will lose our tope four in the next two years. I like what we have there but I would like a couple more.

3. LBers-Perhaps as great of need as CB. We only brought in two last year and Miller could end up on the Dline. I think we need a Mike and a Sam in this class.

4. Darboh

5. Big outside possession receiver. I really like Cedric Gilbert last year because I felt like he could be a Marquis Hamilton type. Nothing special but I guy that's stronger than anyone covering him and can battle for the short passes in big situations.

6. Oline. We still need to continue to build depth.

7. Safeties. We have a lot of young guys there but a couple more in the pipeline would be great.

We already took care of QB for the year IMO. Scout has our early guy rated number 30 right now. Unless there is potential for position change (Knott) then I doubt we are looking for another one. If Robert Standard doesn't make it we will need to look at another back as we will lose SJ, JW and JW all at once. If he does, we have a little more room but I would still like to see one in this class, preferably Roberts. TE isn't a need. Slot receiver shouldn't be a need this year but we will take one if there's a good one out there.

whoever said receivers is right. everyone on here assumes D-line yet we roll in 10 WR every class and 1 DT. then everyone says "well theres only like 2 guys in the whole country that are any good at playing D-line"

this has happened every year since rhoads got here

I'm not sure if we will offer a scholarship to one but we need to bring in another place kicker. Mahoney and Guyer are both seniors.

1 QB, (I like to see 1 per class. We have already signed two so we're good)
2 Safeties
2 Defensive Tackles
1 Defensive End
1 Running Back
2 Corners
1-2 Tight Ends
1 Kicker
1 Punter
2 O line
As many talented receivers as possible
Any opportunity to upgrade talent from there

I agree, outside the obvious DL these will be the biggest need next class. There were a couple of LB committs who switched their committment late the last two classes. In two years we'll lose Knott and Klein.

Yes, not getting Hubert and Boyd will influence this class quite a bit.

They've definitely been hurt some in LB recruiting...decommits from Hubert and Boyd (both to conference schools) plus losing out late with Mars (FIU) and Marry (Ole Miss). Seems to me that they've basically grabbed a bunch of big Safeties as LBs (Bennett, Morgan, Smith, Mattison) outside of Jevohn Miller. I think that LB is a major priority with this class. I doubt it happens, but they may even go JUCO depending on how George and Miller do this season. TE is my other concern. They really haven't filled the pipeline to make up for losing Catlett and Franklin. I don't know that Lemke is a TE and Brun is an unproven JUCO. Pierce Richardson hasn't proven anything yet and Hammerschmidt is an upperclassmen already. I think that they need to find the prototype TE and get him in the system for when Hammer and Brun graduate.

My guesses:

QB: 1 - Rohach
RB: 1 - Can afford to be picky, maybe they sign two if Standard doesn't make grades. I really like the Demas kid out of Houston, but I'd be happy with Daniels or Roberts as well.
WR: 2 - They've been going a little crazy on WRs, but they do lose two starters. Need a big Marquis-type WR.
TE: 1 - Maybe the most important signing in the class.
OL: 3 - They've done a good job here. Keep filling the pipeline with HS kids like the 8 from the past two years.
DE: 2 - Lose two SRs, likely have two SRs starting in 2012. I'll say one HS, one JC.
DT/NG: 2 - Lose Rump, likely have two SRs starting in 2012. Again, one HS, one JC.
LB: 3 - Imperative to find replacements for Knott and Klein. I think Klein moves to MIKE for his SR year, so there's no need for a JC player.
CB: 2 - Keep recruiting guys like Thomas, Lynn and Richardson and they'll be fine.
S: 2 - Got one already in Knott. The other might have to be a JUCO to replace TB.
K: 1 - Best kicker available. Have him compete with Guyer and redshirt him if he can't win the job outright.

That's 20 and should leave a couple of spots open for "best available athlete". I wouldn't be against those spots going to in-state guys like Hill, Malloy, Rodgers or Ferch.

See, I think we'll find a TE in the 11 class. I like Daniels there but maybe Lemke. I'm just not that worried about it I guess. Guyer is also a senior. No redshirt. We don't have a kicker for next year, period.

Interesting if true on Guyer. I thought that they would redshirt him just to give him one shot at the job and not have to rely on a true FR .

As far as TE goes, I agree that they'll find one. I like Daniels there too. He's big enough, fast enough and is used to having the ball in his hands. Lemke I see more as a DE...and I think that he could be a really good one with his wrestling background (that is, if he doesn't end up at a JUCO). The problem as I see it is that both of these kids are going to start out at the wrong position and that will put them behind the curve, where they won't contribute as quickly as they would have if they started at their true position.

I'm not "worried" about TE or LB, but I do think that they are priority positions for the 2012 class.

It is my opinion that both Lemke and Daniels will both be TEs. Lemke can accelerate fairly quickly and is actually a fairly fluid runner. To me, Daniels size and athletism will allow him to do well at whatever position he ends up at.
