Need to replace the AC unit, and guessing will need to do it all. Any recommendations on the group to use? What brand is the best in your opinion. What is the quietest?

You shouldn't need to replace both. Just the A/C if that is the only issue. I replaced A/C with Goodman. You could basically stand next to it and talk on the phone. I would imagine newer units are going to be quiet. I didn't notice a significant difference between my 90s Lennox A/C and the Goodman except for sound. Cost me $3500 to replace the A/C in Clive. This was in the middle of the summer and desperate. I would shop around if you have the time.

I've been using Lozier for a couple years, just doing annual maintenance/tune ups.
My system is a getting up there in age, so I'd be interested in hearing your experience once it's all done.

Certain dealers/installers will only install specific brands. Make sure they install the brand you want. For me, I was stuck with Goodman because that is all the dude could install. Again, I was desperate and needed an A/C fast and not wait a month.

Careful with that line of thinking. I believe the companies will only give you their full warranty if all the equipment matches.

If you saw the other thread I created about smell it appears it's the coil. So I think my only option is to replace the coil. I'm calling a bunch of companies for estimates and hopefully they will salvage most of it. The home is a 10 year old Hubbel home.

Called:
Bryant
Schaal
Lenz
Polk Co
Kohles and Bach

Are certain AC units only compatible with certain furnaces? The previous owner replaced the furnace with a Lennox but the AC is original to our house and needs replaced.

I used local (DSM) guy a couple years ago. Precision A/C. Heard great things from people I referred him to. Number is 515-975-1464. It was under $4k for a FULL replacement. My old (10 years) unit was leaking R22 (thanks landscape guy running their cutting into my compressor) and needed to get replaced. Since R22 was getting phased out I spent a couple hundred more for the full replacement then buying a new compressor and converting it to R22.

Erik was the guys name, he runs a small crew but did great work!

I used Greens for my full hvac project last year that involved new duct work. They did a great job and were much cheaper than a lot of other companies and had a 10 year parts and labor warranty.

Amana was in stalled (same as goodman company now) and is very very quiet. Can barely hear the unit run.

What refrigerant are you running? A 10 year old unit may still be an R-22 unit (units made since 2010 cannot be R-22). This is the last year that R-22 is allowed to be made or imported to the US.

A licensed and insured installer explained this to me. Goodman actually has the longest warranty. I don't know if I really recommend Goodman, but yes, always ask details about the warranty it may be different with other brands.

Did he only install Goodman? I think this is the same guy that installed my A/C unit.

I don't know exactly. My previous house had a new Goodman A/C and 90s Lennox gas furnace. The house I have now has a new Amana gas furnace and a 90s Lennox A/C. Both houses the units work fine.

Its Goodman Amana so it's the same brand. My buddy and I will be replacing mine here shortly. He is selling Geothermal now but has over 10 years in field

Sometimes I see advertising buy an A/C get a furnace free. Has anyone encountered this or is it a bunch of hot air (pun intended)?

Around DSM, I've heard good things about both Green's and Polk Co. in terms of fair price and good work. And yes, Goodman (which used to be viewed as an inferior brand) bought out Amana. A good product for the money.

You don't have to necessarily change out your A-coil, but depending on sizing it may improve your efficiency slightly. (SEER rating) The primary reason for doing so is to get the SEER number up high enough to change categories on potential energy efficiency rebates from the power companies.
