If you have not viewed this site, a good measuring stick for the strength of a team and their competition. Our current SOS (Strength of Schedule) is ranked 1st. Our opponents W-L record so far is 15-2. Our remaining opponents current W-L records are 21-11.

In comparison, Iowa's SOS is 121st. Their opponents W-L record so far is 9-13. Their remaining opponents current W-L record so far is 22-9.

I think this helps put in perspective where our team is at and the program overall. Very difficult schedule. Very young team. The future looks promising. Mangino was a great hire. Given time our offense will be much better.

Do we need to improve? Absolutely! CPR has and deserves the pressure and heat as a Big12 coach. If he does not produce improvement by the end of next year, Pollard must consider change.

As a graduate of ISU, a 20 year plus season ticket holder and a Cyclone Club member, I hope the tremendous fan support continues. After all, Iowa State University and Cyclone Fans are first class!

Great find. I always find it refreshing to read things like this that are backed up by statistics and numbers.

It also has ISU ranked 96 one place above Kansas. Two places in front of North Texas. Two places behind UTSA (I had to google) UT-San Antonio.

On one side of the ball.
We are still looking at losing our starting RB, best offensive lineman, best WR (and returner), what should be a top TE, our best defensive lineman, and best LB. Plus, a couple other starters. Besides the back 7 on defense, young guys also have not gotten significantly better as they get older in this program. Mangino may change that, but you are looking at Year 8 before his imprint would be complete.

As for the SOS, you are including a FCS program in those straight-up records, one with program defining wins are against horrible ISU, KU, CSU, and Minn teams, plus a comeback against a mediocre KSU team. Weber St competed with NDSU as well as we did and we only play 2 or 3 teams worse than NDSU and Iowa.

Good 2nd post, a lot of good info. Now prepare for the flood of people who want to **** all over anything that could be seen as remotely hopeful.

I was hoping to be 2-2 at this point, we're 1-3 so that part is disappointing. I think Saturday will tell us a lot about this team

Am I the only one tired of hearing how young we are and how tough our schedule is EVERY year? Not exagerating, I remember hearing or reading it every year since McCarney's second to last season.

Yep. Nothing new. Just another stat to give people false hope.

I don't view it as an excuse. I view it as, this is the super sized Goliath we are fighting. It's going to be very difficult. It's been done other places. It can be done here. It might take some time and not fun football to get there.

I don't think most say or feel on this board, well we have a Top Ten SOS, better look forward to 4-8. It's we have a Top Ten SOS, this is a giant mountain to climb.

SOS only matters in football to those that are going into the playoffs. ISU will never be in that position. So get as many cupcakes a ******* possible. The only stat I care about is W-L. Most recruits don't give two ***** about SOS.

Can you please hang in there five more years?

Minus some of Chizik's abominations, we have been playing some consistent not-good-enough football. That is not as bad as early Mac era physically-manhandled football, but not what you hope to see well into Year 6.

A lot of fanbases would take this as a negative post. I look at the bright side and think "We could be #252 Stetson".

The problem with the young excuse is that our young guys are part of recruiting classes which ranked 9th or 10th in the conference. We may have lots of young guys, but other schools have better young guys.

Every thread right now mentions Iowa's schedule, why are they continuously our measuring stick? They don't play in the same conference we do. It's getting tiresome.

Are you suggesting we switch conferences?

Well we would probably have more wins if we had TCU, Baylor or Kansas schedule so far.

I've been to every game and following ISU since the year Mac started. After reading your post I thought "maybe it would be good to go back and look at the scores during the first 5 years under Mac". I don't recommend doing this because the scores don't look much better now.

Are you suggesting we switch conferences?

Whats stopping us from scheduling the Grambling States and Idahos of the world?

ISU has had some bad luck with scheduling non cons, but why do we continue to agree to home and homes with decent MAC teams and FCS powers. Nothing to gain from them, a lot to lose.
