Saw this on a KU board and thought would generate some interesting discussion.

Here is my shot at it based on the definition of success as a coach being both a good caoch and a good recruiter.

1. Self - Obviously a good recruiter and has done wonders with what is essentially a brand new team this year.
2. Capel - OU much improved over last year
3. Barnes - Recruits well, and has had coaching success.
4. Anderson - Has "his team" in place now and they seem to be gelling.
5. Martin - Surprising the B12 by not falling on his face after Beasley and Walker left.
6. Sadler - Appears to be an excellent coach, but can he recruit?
7. Ford - Jury is still out, but OK so far.
8. McDermott - B to B- as a recruiter, coaching C to C+
9. Turgeon - A&M has athletes, but his recruiting abilities remain to be seen. Coaching is a big ?
10. Bzdelik - Colorado showing sreaks of competitiveness. Coaching B to B+, but can he recruit?
11. Drew - Baylor in a freefall despite having quality experienced players. Coach has to bear responsibility.
12. Knight - Team has fallen far in a short time under Knight.

I would put Turgeon and Drew ahead of Greg. Baylor is bad this year, but look how far Drew has taken them. They went from the verge of death penalty to tournament in just a couple of years. Turgeon is beating McDermott, so hard to say McD's a better coach. I think he's better than Bzdelik (not by much) and Knight (clearly).

8. McDermott - B to B- as a recruiter, coaching C to C+

Besides Brackins what have you seen out of Greg to consider him a better recruiter than coach?

Agree with previous posters about putting GMac too high.
Also, Bill Self has to be in the mix for national coach of the year. He lost, what, 83% of his scoring and same for rebounding? I don't care how much talent you have, to come back with a gritty, hard-working team that's winning at the same clip says tons about him...

1. Self (not even close)
2. Capel
3. Anderson
4. Sadler
5. Ford
6. Barnes (best at doing nothing with something)
7. Martin
8. Bzdelik
9. Turgeon
10. McDermott
11. Drew (would be 3rd if it was just for recruiting)
12. Knight

Yeah, I don't know how you can rank Turgeon and Drew below McD and Sadler.

Both Turgeon and Drew are average coaches at best. Drew appears to be losing that team more and more everyday. Turgeon is getting by with what Billy G left him as far as momentum goes but I bet A&M is back to being a bottom team pretty quickly

1. Self
2. Capel
3. Anderson
4. Barnes
5. Martin
6. Ford
7. Turgeon
8. Sadler
9. McDermott
10. Bzdelik
11. Drew
12. Knight

Anderson right behind self....look at what he's done in a short amount of time.

1. Self
2. Capel
3. Anderson
4. Barnes
5. Martin
6. Ford
7. Turgeon
8. Sadler
9. McDermott
10. Bzdelik
11. Drew
12. Knight

This would be mine as well...not sure how anyone can put Bzdelik very high, he hasn't done anything at CU except finishing 12th

Sadler has proven he is a good coach this year. Unfortunately, he will never be any higher than 8th on my list until he shows he can recruit.

You can't exclude recruiting from coaching and Drew went to the tournament last year so he has to be ahead of McDermott.

But McDermott beat Drew this year

Seriously though, with what Drew is doing this year with a team loaded with talent, I think it is safe to say that Greg is the better coach. Drew can recruit but if you can't finish better than 8th in an average conference w/ as much returning talent as he has, than your coaching is poor

are we 7th?

Can't put him very high but I can rank him ahead of last. He walked into the worst Major program in college basketball as far as I am concerned. Patton had done nothing with that program and they have zero fan support to show for it

I'm loving the guy in that thread that ranks "Jeff McDermot" 11th.

Jeff McDermott????....Are ya talking about Greg Mac?...I would rank gmac no better than 10th place right now...Greg is a nice guy who cant recruit but is an excellant basketball coach!!!!:biglaugh:

Jamie and Me are retiring together...coach greg mcdermott:cool:

are we 7th?

Does it matter?

Do we have 5 starters that are all top 100 recruits? Yes recruiting is a big part of the deal but if you still can't win does it really matter? Talent wise Baylor should be a top 15 team this year.
