It definitely puts things in perspective, and we could all do/give more to those that are less fortunate.
With that said, I firmly believe the best way to bring prosperity to those areas, is to facilitate American-style capitalism. One thing that I've been donating to recently is a couple of the micro-finance organizations.
By allowing people to create, be productive and consume as they wish, it elevates the standard of living for most of a culture/region/country's people.
Case in point, the poor people in the US (by and large) live a fairly decent lifestyle. Obviously there will always be those that live in destitution in the world, but American-style capitalism tends to do the best job of raising all standards of living.
