Dumb move by the Tigers. At least get the Yanks to throw in a prospect or something. Everyone knows the Yanks needed a catcher once Posada went down so why do them a favor and take a nutjob like Farnsworth off their hands and not get any kind of prospect too even if it was a minor one? Yankees do this every year and no one seems to take advantage that they hold the leverage when the Yanks need something.

Farnsworth did well for Detroit in 05. The Tigers have enough offense. if they're going to make a run, they knew they needed better pitching -- especially in the bullpen.

I agree. The Tigers were looking for pitching to get back into the division race (which, they kinda already are....sorta....) but you CAN'T give up that kind of batting production. This just indicates that they think they were gonna get outhit by the sox and twins anyways, pudge or no pudge. I'm not so sure.

edit: reguarding farnsworth - he's been pretty good of late. until a bad outing on monday, his era has been going down since like, may. his last run allowed (until monday) was a month ago. Don't let the 3.65 era fool you. Looks like he just had a bad couple weeks in may, which was a long time ago

Rodriguez, who is in the final year of his contract, waived his no-trade clause to join the Yankees, sources told ESPN.com.
This isn't a big deal... he is just a rental... That is why the Tigers didn't get a lot.

I'll never forget Farnsworth absolutely beating the crap out of Paul Wilson from the Reds a few years ago.

It's not that insane, Pudge is in the last year of his contract, has zero power anymore and his defense is actually suffering. They weren't even going to try and sign him because they have Inge who is a catcher and been riding the pine since they picked up Cabrera.

The one thing I don't get is Farnsworth, especially since the Tiger pen is FINALLY healthy with Zumaya and Rodney throwing gas again.

Detroit has scored more runs than both the Sox and Twins, despite their dismal start. They have enough offense, which is why they could afford to do this.

really? that surprises me. nice stat. So, it really does make sense, considering pudge is only their 3rd or 4th best hitter

I know that Pudge is getting old and in the last year of a contract but this is still the Yankees and trades like this help teams make the playoffs so that alone it worth getting more than nutjob Farnsworth and his control issues I think. Yankees have talent and money, make them spend some of it instead of trading away a guy they can afford to lose to patch up a weak spot for them right now.

Detroit doesn't care about the Yankees. They're chasing a division championship, not the wild card.

If you look at alot of the trades that have happened lately, guys in their last year have not had alot of value. Look at Texiera, in his prime and the Angels didn't have to give up much at all.

Farnsworth is not a guy that is going to single handedly going to make up 5.5 games alone. The whole team is underachieving after all the money and trades they spent in the offseason. This was a trade to make the Yankees better not the Tigers IMO.

But they are so sporadic... they've also been shutout a league high 11 games this season. That with the second highest payroll in the league.

They need a starting pitcher to make a run at the Twins and Sox.

well, i guess i see this both ways. Right now, wild card looks to come out of the east. Detroit decides to make a move, because any move is better than no mover. However, come the last round of intra-division series, making the Yankees better really might increase the tigers' chances of a wildcard. The east is very competitive, even baltimore who's a .500 team or so. Those teams beat up on eachother enough, and the tigers gain just a little ground, overtake one central team, they could get into the playoffs that way. So, maybe they're giving themselves two options??? i dunno

Uh Kotchman is only 25 and putting up some Ok numbers in just his 2nd full season in the majors and Marek is a fairly decent pitching prospect in AA with a 3.66 ERA, 3 saves, and 57 K's in 46 2/3 innings. He was 21-18 with a 3.51 ERA as a starter his previous 3 seasons in the minors. I would say they got decent value out of that trade with 2 useful young players while Farnsworth is 32 with a career ERA of 4.42 and known to have control issues at times. I don't see this as a move that improves the Tigers at all it was probably more about dumping Pudge's remaining salary $12.38 mil this year to Farnsy's $5.92

I agree. This is the kind of trade you see in fantasy sports, where one owner either doesn't know what he's doing or doesn't care.
