So tonight the wife and I were researching our neighbors property because it's a **** hole with lawn that hasn't been mowed in a few months, garbage piled up every where, the entire old house roof scattered all over the yard (it got wrecked in the derecho), piles and piles of old tires, and a bunch of old broken down vehicles.

First we were shocked that this property has an assessed value of $320,000 (no one in their right mind would pay over $150K for the condition it is currently in) and then we noted that since the current owners bought it in 2015 there have been no property taxes due.

What would cause there to be no property taxes due on a property assessed at $320K?

I plan on taking pics in the morning to pass on when I call the County again tomorrow.

We decided that if the opportunity is ever there to buy this property we will no matter the cost, but we will have to burn the house down because neither one of us want to go inside and see whatever infestation they have going on.

Any chance he pre-paid his taxes early enough that it never shows up as “taxes due?” I’d say either that or some tax abatement program.

It was a really nice property when these people bought it, now not so much.
If the current owners were smart they would protest the tax valuation and get it reduced. There’s like a two week window every year when you can protest your property tax valuations. He should hire an appraiser and bring that with him if he ever does decide to do it.

Why though? There are no property taxes currently assessed.

Are they disabled? once you reach a certain level of disability I think in some cases you can get your property taxes waived.

Not sure. But in my opinion they are mentally disabled LOL

I'd think the Assessors or Treasurers pages would say if they have certain property tax exemptions but I am not seeing that information.

Yeah I checked out the Jasper County assessor and I couldn’t find anything either. I’m kind of curious as well.

I did not know this maybe that is the case

Have you ever met or talked to them? If they were disabled, it’d probably be easy to tell. If they do get some kind of exemption, and they’re not disabled, sounds like fraud.
