I was just looking at a Reddit CFB thread to pick your school’s all-time team. It got me wondering if Troy Davis or David Montgomery was the all-time running back for Iowa State. And although it’s early, I started wondering if it will end up being Hall.

It’s Davis right now, but could be Hall after the end of the season, though statistically, I don’t think anyone will ever top Davis on yards alone. Hall should destroy Davis’s touchdown number (I think he’s only 5 or 6 behind right now) and could potentially top his per carry number. Barring injury, he should have a much more successful pro career. Will probably have to have a monster season, ultimately, to surpass Davis though. Like, pushing 2000 yards. Problem for him is, I think the offensive pieces around him are too good for him to be able to do that.

It's Davis because of the yards although different eras too.

Hall's overall abilities might do it though.

Why is it that despite the fact that Troy did what he did while everyone knew he was going to, that I see Hall as a more dominant player?

For me, he's bigger, faster, and more versatile (particularly in the passing game). I don't think Troy got a lot of opportunities to catch the ball (something I wish we had seen), but there might be a reason for that. I think Breece will have a very solid (better) pro career, if he can stay healthy.

It's a tough call, though, as my argument for Troy would be that Troy would succeed at a really high level on this team, but I don't think Breece could match Troy's stats playing on that team.

Troy Davis. He was the only relevant player Iowa State had, which means everyone in the stadium knew he was getting the ball, and defenses still couldn’t stop him.

I don’t even think Breece Hall winning Heisman this year would change that opinion for me, considering Davis should have won Heisman but didn’t because of the name on the front of his jersey.

A few thoughts: It is unfair to compare Hall to the other 2 yet due to one less season. Early on seeing Breece, I remember noting, this guy might already be better than David Montgomery, and that is saying something. I definitely felt that way last season. To me, the top end speed, the way he sets up tacklers to miss, ability to be patient and use blockers are better than Montgomery. But David is elite at breaking tackles and extremely powerful. Give me Breece if the line isn’t terrible.

However, Troy Davis had 2 seasons with over 2,000 and was the only real part of the offense. Yes, should have won the Heisman. It’s the old best player vs most valuable to their team MVP argument. Breece has a chance to be the best player/best NFL career, and could make a case for his own Heisman trophy this year. I am going with Troy at this point, but let’s see what Breece can accomplish this year. And I do think a great NFL career could add something to the argument in favor of him.

I guess I am of similar mind to a Heisman voter, team success matters.

I vote Breece

Breece is the best player on the best Iowa State team.

Troy was on bad teams, but the offense was build around Troy.

I think it also says something that Troy struggled in the NFL. David has had more success. I believe Breece is the most talented back and he will kill it in the NFL. We have only seen Breece as a freshman and a sophomore. This year should be crazy fun.
