NBA: Pistons trade for Iverson

No practice in Motor City from here on in. The Answer has arrived. Maybe we can watch Mike Taylor of the Clippers try to guard him. Then we could call Mike The Response.

so the Pistons are offically desperate.

Marbury signing is just around the corner.

Shouldn't they be desperate with Boston taking control over the east?

I didn't hear the details but apparently this deal gives the Pistons a ton of cap room to play with.

How do you trade two loyal players that give effort on both ends of the floor for a bum that is a jerk to the media, fans, etc???

It better be a cap room based move.

Iverson is a locker room & fan base menace. He needs a ton of shots to be effective and has lost a step on both ends.

Billups may be a better play straight up.

Iverson is good. If I am a pistons fan I trust in the management. They have made almost all the right moves up there. Except for Darko.

I think it's a little of both, a cap room move and a improvement move - he's definitely past his prime but Billups and McDyess are WAY past their prime.

For the record Iverson has a reputation for being a really good teammate.

I'd also say no one really has questioned his effort on the court. He plays hard, dives for the ball, etc.

He shoots it much less, passes it much more now. When he was coming up in Philly, he did shoot it way too much, not look to pass, etc. He's a lot more of a complete player now, even if he's slowed down a bit.

Billups had this year plus 2 left on his contract and McDyess had this and next. By dumping them now, they get something in return and don't have to worry about their expiring contracts while watching their play continue to decline.

Even if Iverson walks in free agency after this season I think the Pistons are in better shape overall.

I think the likelihood they let him walk is good since they have Stuckey on board who they really like to play the point. Get him some more experience this year and then give him the reigns next year.

There were no players to compete for shots in Philly

There was 1 player to compete for shots in Colorado

There will be at least 3 in Detroit that want looks and one of them isn't the brightest about playing well with others.

Besides, Rip is a better verison of Iverson anyway ... is AI going to play role of pass first point guard in Detroit???? really!?!?

Was Billups a pass first point guard? I don't really think he was, and he has been getting noticably worse.

If I was a Detroit fan I'd be thrilled about this. You get AI for a year, get cap space after this season and you get rid of two guys who are in the twilight of their careers with bloated contracts. Dumars is a good GM.

It's not like they are going to beat Cleveland or Boston anyway - and Cleveland will suck when LeBron is gone and Boston's guys are only getting older. IMO it's time to think long term if they are thinking championship.

Rip 2007-2008: 17.3 ppg, 3.3 Reb per game, 4.2 assists per game, 1 steal per game

AI 2007-2008: 26.4 ppg, 3.0 Reb per game, 7.1 assists per game, 2 steals per game

Iverson was 3rd in points, 9th in assists, 8th in steals last year. Rip wasn't in the top 10 in any of those stats.

Iverson would help the Pistons....

stats are misleading. different offense styles, conferences, and needs from the team.

Especially when they dont support your point!

What shocked me this morning was to hear that there are actually teams contemplating a trade for Stephon Starburry... Now that guy is a worthless piece...

You'd think Denver would have learned about cap space after they locked up Nene and had to dump Marcus Camby because of it.

Chauncey is a pretty good clutch player, and I don't think Iverson is even close to a perfect fit for Detroit. But when you think about the cap space that Detroit is getting, it seems like a really good deal for them.

This is a great trade for both teams. Pistons needed a scorer and Nuggets needed a PG. I also do not think that Iverson is a distraction. There are not too many players that play harder night in and night out than Allen Iverson.
