Are there any pickup "leagues" or groups that meet at Beyer or Lied or even the city rec center during the weeks. I'm trying to find a place to play some games regularly during the week (anytime of day) but have struggled to find a place where guys just out of school, who don't bring a group of 5 can actually get in a competitive game.
Thanks in advance

Out of school = can't get into Beyer, State Gym, or Lied anymore...

Does Ames have a city rec center? (I seriously don't know the answer to that)

I am also looking for a place to play at night, during the week and during the afternoons on the weekends. Any advice would be appreciated.

Real men play outdoors, at the parks and in the streets. Venture on down to American Legion park (or as I call it, the prison yard) in West Des Moines on a Wednesday night some time and you'll always be able to find a game.

I hope you don't mind being one of about two white dudes playing though.

Ames City Hall has the only public gym that I'm aware of, but playing a pickup game isn't the easiest there due to demand. Lots of kids usually.

they make you scan at beyer and state now? lame.

Finding a pick up game was always easy when i was in school (02-07) at any of the 3.

Ames Community Center has pick up games from 6:30-7:30am Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

I believe there are pick up games that plays each day at noon too.

It was just as recent as last year that Beyer didn't scan at all. As long as you brought your own ball you were good to go, inside or outside. Has that been changed for this year?

Starting in October I think they might start requiring passes for non-ISU persons, but for now it is still open, but I don't think there is a consistent game or group. Maybe there could be. We should start one if not.

Cyclonefanatic pickup league.

In a few weeks you won't be able to get into Beyer or State Gym through any entrance other than the main entrance at State Gym.

And that's how it should be. If people in Ames want to use Beyer, they can pay the fee just like all the students have to.

Anyone know of any good rec leagues or pickup games around Des Moines? I'm fairly close to Roosevelt HS and I'm going to see if they do an open gym on the weekend, but I'll take whatever suggestions I can get. Thanks!

There seems to be a lot of pickup games in Ames. There are even coaches and refs.

I'm going to try and get something going on Tuesday nights (women's day at the golf course) in Des Moines at Columbus Park, just across the river from Downtown. The courts have just been completely redone and are really nice and has a little lighting. Probably get started as soon as the weather is half decent...

It is lame, considering it was being renovated during my time at college, and now I can't even use it anymore
