Pete Rose Latest

I do think it is unfortunate for him. Guys now a days take drugs to perform, get addicted to coke, go to jail and they are given a second chance if they act remorseful. I think that Pete's stubbornness really screwed him. Bud's stubbornness is really screwing him. I think he will get in someday, but he won't live to see it.

Difference in time and situation. People were less lenient back then. They will be more lenient in the future. It's just the way things go. The situation difference is gambling can lead to throwing games in order to win a bet.

I'm not supporting PEDs either. I think they are cheating tools and players should be banned from the sport for using them. Maybe that is too harsh, but if you get caught and only get a short suspension, it is totally worth it. You have already made the millions on play and endorsements so you can afford the punishment.

Cheating by trying to improve your performance, which was common back in the '70's with amphetamines, is different than betting on games you are in. If you cross that line into leniency you risk Vegas and gambling interests controlling the outcome of games. There is no room for leniency because once that happens you lose the public forever in skepticism on the very integrity of your game and league.

Pete Rose is the only one to blame for his situation. His tour of bitterness needs to end it is not helping him.

You don't lose integrity of the game when you know people are cheating by using various drugs?

Maybe this is not seen as a huge difference to some, but the worry with gambling is that you try to throw a game that your team may be capable of winning. PEDs are used to increase performance to help your team win.

So something like corking a bat wouldn't be a big deal then?

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Before he started betting on baseball, Pete Rose knew exactly what the penalty would be if he got caught. He knew that the penalty was a lifetime ban, he bet anyway, got caught and was given a lifetime ban. Baseball is the only major sport where the World Championship was thrown because of gambling. That was many years ago, but the legacy of that is still a major part of the game.

Rose is scheduled to be in Dubuque for a poker tournament next month. (Also a softball game at field of dreams)

So if Rose had only bet on his team to win then he should be in the HoF?

That we know of.

No. He still bet. That starts down a road that they don't want to go down.
I understand they don't want to go down that road, but why? You can cheat to win in other ways and not get a lifetime ban, so if you bet on your team to win shouldn't that be the same thing? This is hypothetical obviously.

So if Rose had only bet on his team to win then he should be in the HoF?

According to Pete, he only bet on his team to win. That should be taken with a grain of salt since he lied about gambling for about 15 years.

There is a clear distinction between cheating to win and doing something that might make one vulnerable to throwing a game. Even if he only bet on the Reds to win and he never lost much money, he could have put himself in a situation where it would be easier to throw a game for a financial gain than to win. Explain to me a situation where a person on performance enhancing drugs or one using a corked bat will throw a game and have some sort of personal gain.

There's no integrity in baseball. That was gone when they looked the other way so Sosa and McGwire could save them. I haven't looked deeply into it but is there any proof Rose affected the integrity of the game? Did he bet against his own team? If not, I don't see why we can't end this charade. A ten year ban would be fine but giving him a lifetime ban is ******** considering what they have let go.
