There are the obligations we all have to uphold the law. There are then the obligations we all have to do what is right.
It has become increasingly clear that while Penn State University President Graham Spanier has not been charged with breaking any laws, he did not do what is right — for his school or, more importantly, for the alleged victims of coaching legend Jerry Sandusky.

Spanier needs to step aside. If he doesn’t, the university board of trustees needs to take that step when it meets this week.

As for Joe Paterno, the face of Penn State and the man who has pushed for excellence on the football field and for the entire university, this must be his last season. His contract should not be extended.

This is not about age. This is not about rebuilding a football team.

It is impossible not to cringe when hearing the charges against Sandusky. From 1994 to 2008, he is said to have sexually abused eight boys as young as 8 years old. Some victims reported up to 20 incidents.

Though Sandusky is said by the attorney general’s office to have found the boys through his Second Mile charity for kids, many incidents are said to have happened in the football locker room at Penn State — both before and after Sandusky retired as a Nittany Lions coach in 1999.

The allegations are horrifying in nature, stupefying in quantity, nauseating in detail.

The courts will determine whether Jerry Sandusky is guilty of any crime. Until then, he is presumed innocent. That is the bedrock of our democracy.

The court system will also determine whether Athletic Director Tim Curley and university Vice President Gary Schultz committed perjury. The twists and turns of such things as the statute of limitations and legal definitions will play key roles in the courtroom.

But right now, here, today, we know what Spanier and Paterno did — and did not do.
OUR VIEW: Penn State's Graham Spanier, Joe Paterno need to leave as result of Jerry Sandusky case. Doing what the law required wasn't enough | PennLive.com

I personally cannot imagine reporting such an incident, and then not following up after nothing happens. Such an act cannot be simply a matter of reporting it and then letting the upper management deal with it. I don't think I could continue working at a place that buried such information, and even if I did, I'd like to think I would be watching like a hawk (and having others watch for me) to make sure nothing was happening.

I don't see any way Joe Pa returns after this is done. This is going to be a huge deal and I think PSU will have to totally clean house. Whether or not you believe Paterno has blame in this situation is irrelevant. There simply needs to be a clean start. I don't believe he is free of blame but I don't think he has the blame that others do either. I really don't know what he was lead to believe by the AD. I have a hard time imagining he knew these details and didn't do more.

I agree but if he was told everything had been thoroughly investigated, he probably believed it. I'm not saying he shouldn't have done more because he should have. He is the most powerful person at that University and he would have had the pull. I just don't know if he was necessarily informed correctly on what was going on.

With how well Penn State is playing and now this stuff, it is safe to say that Joe Pa will retire after the end of the season.

I really haven't read enough to make an accurate assessment of what he knew or didn't know (the whole story just pisses me off, so I haven't dug too deeply into it). I am quite positive that something like this should not have gone unnoticed for so long.

If there is a discrimination I am aware of at work, I call HR. If there is harassment, I tell my boss or call HR. If there are policy violations I tell my boss.

If someone is raped in the break room I pick up the phone and dial 911. If someone that works for me comes to my office and says they saw someone being raped in the the locker room at the fitness center. I hit the speaker button on my phone, dial 911, say I am sitting with "x" who informed me he witnessed a rape.

Asking why Jo Pa didn't follow up is not even close to the right question. Why did he not report a crime to the appropriate authority which is not his boss it is the police? Jo Pa should not be gone at end of season, he does not deserve the privilege to coach the rest of the season. That he has not resigned already or been fired is a tragedy and a disgrace.

Even if we gave JP the benefit of the doubt there obviously was no follow up of any meaningful sort.

So why does he have job today?

Not sure if the school is looking to get rid of him but the people that can fire him are also wrapped up in this as well. If they let Paterno go they are essentially stating that they themselves should be fired.

I personally think that Paterno should go.

This is something disturbing that a lot of people do things what's best for them under circumstances instead of what's right.

GA, Janitors, etc could have done better but they probably did more "best" than "right". Same thing with JoePa.

Exactly... So do the right thing now and resign effective immediately

Give Rhoads an extension now, so Penn State doesn't come calling!

Now no college football athlete has any reason to be going to Penn State...Other than if they have no other scholly's.
