Penn State Close to Deal with Mullin

Don't know if I would want to be the coach to follow JoePa but assuming that he isn't hit with major restrictions from everything that has gone on, I think that he can do well there.

After rumors that Mississippi State football coach Dan Mullen might leave for Penn State, 16 WAPT talked to Mullen in Jackson at the Conerly Awards.

Mullen declined to answer the question saying, "these kind of stories can have a negative impact on recruiting."

A spokesperson for MSU said that reports Mullen is close to leaving are false.

On Tuesday, ESPN named Mullen as the No. 1 candidate for Penn State's vacant head coaching position.

Mullen, 39, is a Pennsylvania native and was born in Drexel Hill. He played tight end and graduated from Ursinus College in his home state in 1994.

This would be career suicide for this him IMO...I don't think we have even scratched the surface on what is going to come out after the dust settles. I can't believe a big name coach would want to go into that situation when the legal process hasn't even begun to play out and various other organizations (including the NCAA) have begun formal investigations. By the time this is all over PSU could be in really bad shape.

Wasn't he the one that reportedly offered Cam $180,000? I guess the big10 is bringing in the SEC coaches to show them how to cheat and get the NCAA to look the other way.

I agree. If I were a coach I would not want to take that job. There is so much going on there to deal with and it will not be over soon because you know there will be lawsuits filed against the university. So not only will the coach have do deal with the pressure of simply putting a winning footbal team together but they will deal with the press regarding the scandal, lawsuits, possible sanctions, the negative recruiting that will take place against them, they will have to combat the negative image now of the university and football program.

Flip side is that a coach in this situation can essentially build it from the ground up. I would guess that the next PSU coach will have a VERY long honeymoon period as expectations will be low, and should be kept low. Out of control boosters will be reined in, and not allowed to pressure the AD to fire someone when they aren't playing in BCS bowls in 3 years.
Not every coach is built for that. Chizik would fail miserably, as would Kiffin, or any coach with any sort of ethical taint or job-jumper reputation. I don't follow Mullen, but appears he might have the right makeup.
If you think long-term, someone starting from Ground Zero (and PSU is Ground Zero in the Hirosima sense) could be the next JoePa (pre-scandal). Not a bad upside, IMO.

I don't see the NCAA doing a whole lot here. PSU is doing a good job of cleaning house by getting rid of the parties involved. Really not much for the NCAA to do after that. They shouldn't punish the kids that had no involvement in any of this by placing them on probation or any other sanctions.

If JoePa and the AD were still around, then yes, by all means, punish away, but I think it may be a little much to punish any new regime that is installed.

If you think that Penn State fans and alumni will accept a losing team, I think you are wrong. This is a program that expects to be at the top and they aren't going to stop expecting that. They aren't going to want to deal with the scandal and a losing football team at the same time.

Career suicide maybe, but in reality he is set for life, he has alread made a few million coaching at MSU, plus his contract at Penn State will be multi-million plus if they ever canned him he would get at least a million dollar buyout.
Its not like he could not find a OC coaching gig down the line for 6 figures. He may fail as a Head Coach at PSU. (For the record he will do fine) but he is set for life and his immideate family is as well.

I could see Mullen jumping ship from MSU to Penn State. MSU is a very tough place to win, they don't have very good fan support, facilities lag far behind their conference foes, don't have a bunch of deep pocketed boosters, and they are in the same division as LSU, Bama, Auburn, and Arkansas.

PSU would be a much easier place to win, even with everything that's going on there currently. As others have said, I don't think a whole will come down from the NCAA, so there shouldn't be much long-term fallout on the football program.

I don't think they'll like it, but lowering expectations should be Job 1 for the new president, AD, and HC. I think it'll be a LONG time before they return to relevance, let alone prominence.

But I could be wrong. From what I've read, that alumni base borders on the cultish.
