OSU false start on third down

I didn't see anyone comment on this. Did it seem odd that the play was allowed to play out then after we made the stop the refs threw a flag for false start? Then on the do-over down OSU throws for a first down.
Did anyone notice exactly when the flag was thrown? In my observation it was after the play was over but maybe I didn't see it correctly.

my cynical thought is they'd keep throwing the false start flag until OSU got a successful first down.

no idea why a penalty should help the offending team.

The flag was thrown really late. Most of us thought it was thrown after the incompletion. We were wondering how the refs could have called pass interference on Iowa State. We were all wondering WTH when the play was over and there was a yellow flag on the field. That passing play too some time to develop. The Ref did not blow the play dead like you are supposed to do on a Procedure Penalty.

I would like to go back and take a second look, does anyone remember at what point that was in the game? I was thinking early 4th quarter? I about had blew a gasket when it happened.

A false start, by definition, happens before the play begins. The officials are supposed to blow their whistles and stop the play. Maybe they were trying to do that and the players couldn't hear them, I don't know.

But essentially a false start ends the play right there, prior to the snap. Nothing that happens after that counts. The administration of that penalty was correct, which sucks based on the outcome of the "non play," but that's how it's supposed to work. Well, the play is supposed to be stopped before it gets going, that's how it's supposed to work.

Just stop a third and long once and we're not even having this discussion. How much more wide open could that kid have been on the next play? None. None more wide open.

Where were the whistles at the start of the play? Time for another Big 12 apology letter?

Hey, the refs were paid a good sum to do their thing. They continue to drop the ball.

IIRC, it occurred on OSU's game winning drive.

Talking to someone I know saw it happen right in front of them. Supposedly the ref dropped the flag waaayyyy late.

Going to watch my DVR of the game soon. Couldn't tell for sure while in the stadium but I didn't hear any whistles until way after the pass fell incomplete. Didn't see any replays on the big boards either. Officials should be running toward the ball with whistles blaring as soon as they see the infraction in this situation and we didn't see any of that.

Flags can be picked up.

Yes. Had they got the first down, you would have heard either "there is no penalty for illegal formation" or else "offsides defense - penalty is declined".

How does the questionable officiating here relate to what happened for OSU at Texas?

If they were going to go this route, don't you think they would have called the offsides when they didn't pick up the first down? Move the team closer to a first with another shot at it rather than put them in a longer 3rd and long?

I'm not sure it was a conspiracy, but it certainly is fishy if the flag did indeed come out that late. I haven't seen an angle that shows the ref who threw the flag.

Friend of mine sitting near where the official was said he threw the flag at the correct time and was running down the line of scrimmage as the play was occurring.

It was the fans fault for making too much noise that everyone on the field didn't hear his whistle.

Yeah I probably need this.... :jimlad:

After they converted that third down as when I knew the game was over.

After they converted? Hell I knew when they had another chance the game was over. No way we could stop them on 3rd down twice in a row. And to rub salt in the wound the defender slipped and he was wide open.
