Guys,

this question came up on a rival site and my buddy and I are split on the answer of speed. Just wondering ifany of our experts would weigh in.

Here is the copy of the question.

So my provider is Mediacon. Been with them for a couple of years now. My speed is 200 (GB???). My bill has almost doubled because I am no longer on that introductory rate. I’m thinking of calling in to seek a better deal. My question is twofold.

1. has anybody had luck haggling with them similar to haggling with satellite companies.

2. I’ve done speed tests and have never been over 75 GB. If I was to lower my plan to the next step down(100), would it actually slow down at all since it’s never above 100 now.?

are you on WIFI?? as the modem may be the biggest choke point.. but honestly we have Windstream and even that is $80 a month for 25gb speeds (rural NE IA)..

Mediacon, as you put it, sends signal out to an entire area. The more people using it the worse your speeds. You'll do much worse at 6pm than at 4am. If you pay for 100, you won't get 100. Will you do worse than 75? I have no idea. You could try it and see what happens, worst case you call them and ask for 200 back.

Unless you're playing video games, whatever you get at the 100 price is probably more than enough speed. Save some green!

Haggling doesn't seem to work as well as it used too. They seem to have caught on that everyone was willing to haggle.

Quick reminder. If you go from the 200 Mbps plan down to 100 Mbps plan your usage allowance drops to 1,000 GB.

I've found a couple things can impact your speed. Primarily, your router is the first key device. I upgraded to a mesh system a couple years ago and started seeing the speeds I was paying for. Second, some of my devices aren't capable of attaining those speeds. One of my computer's does while another does not. My phone does while my tablet doesn't. Running a speed test on your router is a good way to determine the bottleneck.
