Really looking forward to my first colonoscopy on Monday! Not really. Anyone got advice/stories?

But don't flush them.

My husband was incredibly loopy after the first one for the rest of the day. He had a few polyps so he recently went back for his second one that was supposed to be within five years but was more like nine. He had no polyps this time but wasn’t nearly as wiped out by the anesthesia. Not sure if they used something different or if it was because he wasn’t in there as long. The first time, he remembered nothing they told him and was an imbecile the rest of the day. This time, he came home and went back to work.

I have only had one, I think they told me ten years because I had no polyps or anything wrong. I was fine afterwards.

Regardless of whether you are “slick as a whistle” as they told me, or have a few issues like husband, they push you to take some kind of fiber supplement like Metamucil. Not sure why if your diet has been sufficient to avoid problems. I ignored that.

One thing I thought was disturbing is there doesn’t seem to be tons of privacy when they talk to you in the recovery area. Husband told me everything they told the woman on the other side of the curtain from him. They were pretty sure she had cancer but she suspected something with bleeding she was having. Seems like a person like that should get a room alone to recover.

I'm still here. :)
Last time the final drink of stuff a few hours ahead of time nearly didn't stay down. Prep has changed over time - mostly better.

I guarantee the prep is worse than the actual procedure.
History of colon cancer in my fam - it took my grandmother in her 70s - so when my first (around 45 yrs old) showed multiple polyps, they had me come in every 6 months until I had one with no polyps. Took 2.5 years of that... :(

Now I'm on a five year rotation. My trick is to start a jello (NOT RED) and liquids diet at least two days before the procedure. That way, when you start the prep, there's less in there to clean out, and the prep doesn't cramp you as much. Works for me, but I can't guarantee it will work for anyone else.

Oh - the red jello thing? Yeah, kinda tinges everything red in there, makes it harder for the doc. I heard about that big time when I made that mistake. :D

My first was 30 years ago. No sedation. Doc said we will go till you say stop. I would definitely suggest the sedation route!

Odd. Were his hands on your shoulders or hips as he performed yours? If so, I'd suggest the sedation route as well.

I haven't yet had a colonoscopy but I have had some surgery down there. The first time I met my doctor I stood next to him and realized he was 6'5" and had fingers like bratwursts. I hadn't even got done shaking his hand and I said "you're this size and you decided when you got to medical school to be a GI doctor? What's wrong with you?"

I was later smacked in the face with the realization that his fingers were in fact as large as I thought they were.

My Dad had one about 35 years ago without sedation. His colon was fine but the doctor told him not to let another doctor talk him into any more colonoscopies because of the angulation of his colon. It was a rough trip and they didn’t sedate him because of other health issues.

Write down a list of all the questions you have before and after the procedure. Often when people are processing results their minds are going a mile a min or they are a bit out of it so prepping questions in advance helps. It’s also best to ask when you have staff directly in front of you instead of having to call back.
