Official Post-Game Thread - ISU vs. SDSU

(Yes it was SDSU, and Yes big 10 and big 12 defenses will be tougher for him to run on, But he has it in him, he is one of the fastest guys on the team)

I was just advising a little caution.

I mean, at the very least, if Austen holds onto the job, Phillip can redshirt next season (when we actually have another quarterback), and start at least one year, right?

The 202 yards on interception returns eclipsed ISU's total from all of last year and set a new single-game school record.

Sed's catch in the endzone was great. The guy covering him was all over him and he still made that catch.

Mahoney made all three of his field goals, from 35, 36 and 30 yards, and went 5-for-5 on extra points.

We know he is good in gimme range.

Mahoney put six of eight kickoffs inside the 10, including two to the goal line.

Can't complain with that.

Another thing that really stood out was the no punts, it is nice to see the offense can move the ball.

I thought our defense played much better then expected while the offense was just a little off. Wish we would have run the ball just a bit better. I like the no huddle looking to the side offense they ran. I've never seen anything quite like that before.

Michael Bibbs name was called a lot. He had a good night.

Arnaud had a good night, but my oh my is Bates a fast quaterback. I saw shades of Senaca Wallace in some of the things he did with his feet.

Glad to see a kicker who does not miss. He looks like a bean pole, but as long as he keeps kicking them through who cares?

A sloppy win, but one that will be really good for the coaching staff to pick apart on tape and make impovements. I think our team is more athletic, but still young and it will be a long season.

One of those links has a good picture of the A-Rob touchdown that was spotted at the 1...

Good thing we punched it in on the next play.

i no there is a lot of talk about the unnecessary roughness penalties, but lets take a look at this quick... one was BS when the ball popped out... the one with the corner knocking the receiver over was BS in my opinion because the WR was shoving to start it, not our fault our guy was just stronger!! the other was unnecessary... but i dont think that those will be a reoccuring theme... good game clones!! showed me alot!! still some to work on though... hey, we have maroney for 3 years!! if he kicks the way he did last night he will be going pro early :)

Oh, and I'm still waiting for one of the pessimists to acknowledge that we optimists(/realists) weren't just drinking Koolaid at the thought of winning by more than two touchdowns. I think that's referred to as "eating crow", but at least they can do so happily.

What I might have been most impressed with is the overall improvement in athleticism. Just, across the board. Well, except maybe for safety. And while i have to admit that Jesse Smith looked good--it was against an FCS team. Whether he'll look as quick against Kansas might be something different.

That said, depth was also greatly improved. All right, so some of these guys have a lot to learn (and grow)--and will only be better next season. But they're still capable of helping now.

It's a great time to be a Cyclone!

Even if Arnaud wins the job this season, Bates will be making it a battle every year and I think would likely win the job away if he can harness his abilities.

Anybody know if anything was up with Hamilton? He didn't have any catches and I believe the starters for the game were Sumrall and Darks.

Not going to buy that one, because as exceptional as Bates is with his feet, Arnaud is with his arm. It might become a real contest...

Next morning thoughts:

The personal fouls were a bit much. Some were garbage calls, but I chalk it up to the guys being tired of hitting each other and excited to hit a different colored jersey.

It's interesting how loyalites change perceptions. If the Hawkeyes have four personal fouls we'd call them undisciplined thugs and tell them to stop crying about the officiating. When it happens to us...

That's because hawkeyes ARE undisciplined thugs, look at the police blotter for proof.

That first call was b.s. FYI: football is a contact sport, I haven't seen floping like that since the NBA wrapped up last June. The second one I won't defend, it was blatant and I don't remember the third one.

Likes: Kicking game, improved speed, intensity, uniforms, no huddle offense

Dislikes: Interior D (both run and pass D), pass rush by front 4, TO's

We need Banks back quickly. Guy flat out flies around the field. Here is hoping for a quick recovery from whatever his injury is.

One thing I was impressed with was our ability to react to what plays SDSU was calling. They kept running those short slants when they needed 4-6 yards or so. So what do we do, we throw Schmidgall on an underneath zone and he's waiting on that route on a third down and takes it back for 6. It was a great call by the defensive coordinator.

Just curious--did anyone noticed what position Ernest Ferguson linedup at? I mean, besides just "linebacker". Weakside, middle, or strongside?

In-game coaching and adjustments. Refreshing!

I'm thinking it was the second one, not completely sure, it was on a play where the guy was clearly down, but, the ball did pop out. It would depend on weather or not the whistle blew, but, on the replay, you could clearly see why the defender jumped on the guy late, he thought it was a fumble. Stupid in some ways, but, being jacked up for the first game, you see a loose football, I don't blame the guy for going for it. Although, if the whistle had blown he should know better.

I'm pretty sure the whistle had NOT been blown.

Then that was kind of a BS call as well. I mean yeah, it's a bit of homerism on my part, but the ball was clearly out and bouncing around when the guy rolled onto his back. If the whistle had not blown yet, I do not blame the Defender for jumping on that. I understand, the refs didn't see the ball, but come on then, if you're calling him down, blow the whistle.
