***Official ISU-Pitt postgame thread***

Yeah, of all the things to complain about, running off Hinson is not on the list.

I’m not complaining about anything because we made the tournament and that’s the ultimate goal. Coming into this season, this would be a success. BUT…big but…this team was a legit top 15 team 2 months ago. We’ve faded hard the last two years and haven’t been able to score 60 points in an NCAA tournament game. Luckily we did enough to win twice last year and we held Pitt to 59 points. So defensively it’s there. But we also haven’t scored 60 in a tournament game. And today it took charity from the other team to score 40. That’s not sustainable or a winning formula to do anything other than squeak by.

Curious as to why officials did not give ISU some time to shoot around prior to actual start of game. They came out of the locker room and had to stand around the whole time, while they leveled the basket / during that time, Pitt was shooting around?

We were offered extra time per the ncaa tweet. But we declined it.

From ESPN:

Pitt coach Jeff Capel said the Panthers' game plan was built around a belief that Iowa State couldn't shoot its way to a win.

"Just looking at the stats, watching them play, they had struggled to score really all year," Capel said. "They really needed turnovers. That's how they scored. ... When we were organized offensively, we were really able to contain them."

Correct. That is the way to beat us.

If you told me the day TJ was hired we'd be 2/2 on making the tournament with a 2-2 record (a Sweet Sixteen though being booted in the first round once), then I would have been ******* estatic at the time.

The future is bright. Lots of work to do this spring with the transfer portal and this summer with integrating the new guys into the roster and culture, but TJ has built two tournament teams in the past two springs with resources approximating the value of a stick of gum and some paperclips. This is still lots of fun!
The future is bright. I'm kind of nervous (because I'm an ISU fan and have a little of a nut cup thing going on) about where he's brought this team so far so quickly. If this recruiting class pans out, we look really (REALLY!) good going forward.

Must be that Duke education to figure that out. But no mention that we had our worst 3 point shooting day of the year on wide open shots.

But we were never that good of a shooting team. That was the way to beat us. If we would have shot better, it would have been closer or we may have won. But we did lose by 19.

Every team that lost would have been closer by shooting better, literally. Every. Single. Team. lol.

We have a chance if we hit anywhere close to our average and we didn’t. They limited turnovers which is what we need to drive our offense.

But at some point does Pitt deserve some credit?

Sometimes our fan base is weird. Because when we lose it is because of some weird fluky thing, but it has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with coaching. In fact, it is never the coaches' fault. But it is also never due to anything the other team did.

The team this year played real ****** against a lot of not great teams (Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, TT, Iowa, West Virginia etc) and they played really well against a lot of great teams (Baylor, Kansas State, TCU, Kansas).

There's a reason that we played the way we did this year. I'm not smart enough to figure out what it is, but I'd guess that the coaches will try and figure it out.

I don't think it was ever a top 15 team, they performed beyond their analytics for a few weeks and then moved back to their mean.

Offensively it certainly needs to get be better.

I mean you could listen to non coach Chris Williams and get that same generic game plan. Make us shoot and don’t turn the ball over to us. Pack it in. Did they do anything to make us shoot worse? I didn’t see it, we just have generally bad shooters who can all be terrible shooters in a given day.

Understood and agree. I think he’s been a master motivator (to your culture point) and excellent recruiter. I do worry long term about in-game coaching and roster construction
Roster construction will be one to watch. That is what Prohm's biggest error was. In game coaching leaves a little to be desired, but he's not the worst

We’ve had games of 47, 44, 41, 36, 41, and 41 the last two seasons. Today’s 41 was the only time in the 40s this season.

I looked at the box score. Objectively - the best offensive game was Hassan Ward. He took zero shots in 13 minutes and only had one turnover
Speaking of the box score, I thought it was interesting to note that each team made only 14 field goals for the entire game.

TJ and the staff have a lot of work to do before next season. Transfer portal should be fun to watch. We're definitely in need of some offensive players who can consistently shoot. Enjoyed a good part of the season, but that was the most inconsistent team I can ever remember at ISU. We need 2 guards and a big in the portal imo. I see Lipsey/Williams at the point. King/OB at the 4, and the rest of the roster in need of improvement. Watson needs to work on his shot or just come off the bench. Hope a couple other freshman surprise, but not counting on it.

Omaha is going to be a one and done.
