Official Duke Postgame Thread

Going to have to side with McD on this. His back is nearly against the wall this year if we don't see a tangible change in where our team is headed so any tactic he needs to draw the team together and actually play like they care is fine in my book.

What amazes me about most of you is how you think this is the first time McD has had an issue with Colvin and he immediately airs it to the public. I can guarantee that this has been an issue for awhile and what tactics McD has used before just won't get through. Sometimes you need to tear down a kid and build him back up.

Doing it so the fans know that Colvin is hurting the team might very well work. And if it doesn't, well we can't fault McD for not trying to make this team rally around each other.

I say lock him in an electrical closet for a bit. That should get his head right.

Well you don't have to be an engineer to figure out that if you take away Brackins you beat ISU. You do need to be a good coach to figure out how to get him more opportunities or game plan another effective option. Duke was not athletically superior to ISU tonight.

This team is SOFT, soft, soft . . . they will be lucky to win 6 games in the Big XII. They are not a team nor are they mentally tough. What a shame and what a waste of talent.

You guys are just brutal, you realize Duke is ranked the 7th best team in the country right now.
Duke has far more talent on the court than ISU. How many McDonalds All-Americans do we have coming off the bench again?
I thought we played a hardfought game last night, and just couldn't make the runs when we needed in the second half.
Duke has and will continue to beat a lot of teams by 20 this year. They are a potential final 4 team.

While in any one instance getting beat by this team isn't a bad deal, I'm disappointed that we NEVER win these anymore. There are a lot of teams out there that should be worse than ISU generally that pull off great upsets like this once in a while. We used to, do not under Mac.

This game is done and I don't care how it went really. What I care about is what the team does with the experience. They now know 1) what its going to take to play with actual good teams and 2) saw up close what those good teams do to be considered good in the first place. Both of these can easily help a team improve, so now I sit back for a few games and see if that happened. We should know by the end of the second Big 12 game exactly where this team is headed.

On a brighter side....I have won a ton of credits this year off ISU basketball.
Like I said before this game. It would be just like the CAL game and that we are at best an NIT team. I think we are going to win only 1 out of our next 6 games.
NDSU - W

KU -L
@OU -L

Unless they figure something out it going to get ugly. Its really too bad.

The real problem is its 2010 and other than an under achieving Stinson and Blalock team that started 0-5 conference in 2005 my 9 year and 5 year old boy having no good thoughts about ISU basketball other than sucking. Then when you think of Gilstrap and Brackins leaving...I am not sure what to think about next year. We got really good recruits coming in, but they will still be freshman.

We have a soft team with a soft 4th year head coach.

I agree....we will see what type of team we have after the 2nd game in conference. That is....did we play inspired BB against Texas to either win it in a tough battle?....or do we get smoked again? Then, how did we play on the road against Nebby? If we lose both of these games.......kiss the season goodbye and say night-night to our coach.

Sorry for that. I have this horrible combination of positivity and sarcasm that cannot be contained.

Did you listen to Jay Bilas at all tonight? He was very complimentary about the direction of ISU basketball under Coach McDermott.

Yeah, ESPN announcers usually criticize coaches on the air during games!:jimlad:

Except that scouts talk directly to coaches about a player's motivation and attitude, and Gmac could remind Colvin in a direct or indirect way about that.
No, I think it was entirely self-serving, in that Gmac wants the fans to know that it's not him, it's "these players" he has to deal with, and for us to see the obstacles in his way to build a successful program.

Sad but true...the self preservation instincts are strong in humans.

I really like that while we were forced to watch KU salvage their game, ISU turned it over on their first 6 possessions of the 2nd Half. UGLY

Can pretty much guarantee if we let GMac go he will land at another program and be very successful there while we wander aimlessly replacing coach after coach every 3 yrs.

I'm just not ready to give up on this team until the final bell sounds on the final game. It's obvious that they need to improve. But I see this as the first really complete team (meaning experienced and talented) that McDermott has had at ISU, and still, they have some things to learn. I fully believe that they will pull things together as they go through the Big 12, and that they'll be at least a bubble team.

Ever the optimist, I agree. I didn't think we'd beat Duke (but hoped for a better showing). We have basically two starters from last year's team -- DG and CB (Staiger had injury problems). Vandy is a shadow on the court right now. With a win this weekend we'll be 11-4 for the pre-conference, not TOO bad. We'll need to be 8-8 for conference play, with a win (or two) in the Big XII tournament to dance. Our SOS by then should be very good. We'd need to be at least 8-8 in conf no matter what our record was pre-conf to be considered anyway, IMO. I see improvement in different areas as the season is progressing, and I think that will continue. We really need to have better games against Texas and Kansas than we did vs Duke, though.

This is where the program was four years ago today - getting demolished by Duke, locker room mutiny, our PG about to be suspended, our SG about to leave to go semi-pro, commencing a 4-12 B12 season, etc etc.

What Fred has done in four years is absolutely amazing. Top 10 ranking, undefeated, tie-ing (breaking?) school record winning streaks, great team chemistry, winning close games, recruiting at our highest level etc etc.

Thank you Oregon for giving us our basketball team back.
