Official Duke Postgame Thread

Not really, I heard over Christmas break he was unhappy and stated he was basically out after the season.

Why isn't Buckley getting more time then? If GMac wasn't happy with Colvin, then put Buckley in for him and sit him down. That will send a message loud and clear. But don't call him out in front of the media. That is not a good thing to do at all IMO. Wouldn't be surprised at all if Colvin left. That is not cool at all. If GMac has a problem with Colvin, then take game time away from him and talk privately with him about it.

Agree 100%

McD is still going to play the best player. Colvin is still going to play hard even if he is out next year. If he goes out and doesnt try, then buckley would be right in

This is exactly my point. You can be as tough as nails as a coach, a total dictator, an ******* if need be - behind closed doors. Yet Gmac talks about his issues with Colvin to the press, yet still plays him? WTF?

No way. We would have beat UNI with the way we attacked on offense and went after shooters in the first half.

I refuse to believe we'll play worse than the UNI game until we go to Boulder

I agree. Just the effort in this game would have beaten UNI and NW. That effort coupled with fundamental improvements would enable this team to be a top 20 team. Beat Duke tonight, probably not, but they could have played within 6-10 points.

Based on the frustration displayed by the players in this game towards the end and the embarrassment Brackins must be feeling after passing up the draft because of potentially not going in the lottery, I think this team had a moment late in the game that showed they have come to clearly realize there are problems.

That can either lead to a team's collapse if they blame each other. Or else it will draw them together and enable them to openly identify and talk about the problems to enable them to work as a team to find solutions and implement change.

I am going to stay hopeful based on the desire and age of this team that the latter will occur. If so, there is still enough season left to right the ship.

Showing improvement thru the year and finishing strong can still put this team in a position to meet their goals.

Saw some good individual efforts out there, but as a team we absolutely suck. I'll put that on the coach and for the first time I will admit it is time for a change. Thank God I grew up a wrestler and have something to look forward to over the winter.

I'm just not ready to give up on this team until the final bell sounds on the final game. It's obvious that they need to improve. But I see this as the first really complete team (meaning experienced and talented) that McDermott has had at ISU, and still, they have some things to learn. I fully believe that they will pull things together as they go through the Big 12, and that they'll be at least a bubble team.

I'm not ready to give up...I just have a bad feeling. I think the longer the effort and discipline issues we're seeing from this team continue to fester, the harder it's going to be for us to pull it out of the fire.

I suspect Gmac is calling players out because he's not getting through to them, because things just aren't clicking for them as they should, as a winning basketball team should. Regardless, It's pretty obvious that this is going to be a turning point for ISU basketball. From here we're going to sink or swim and I want ISU b-ball to be the Michael Phelps of the Big XII, sans bong.

Rebounding continues to be an issue but the guys played with some serious fire for the first time after the first timeout in the first half.

I agree. We lost, got killed on the scoreboard. But I saw fire and intensity in this team tonight. That was an improvement, that many times alone will win games.

Second, I think getting embarrassed on the boards will force Greg to try new things in practice... maybe radical things. That too was needed for this team to improve.

I don't think this team can just toss this game away and move on. They will be forced to deal with the positive and negatives.

A very good pre-B12 learning experience for this newly formed team.

Why can't he get them to play and rebound like he did as a player? I've seen tapes - Gmac was rough, he was aggressive, he threw his weight around. I don't get it.

What possible reason is there to "go public" with a problem with a player other than a self-serving one?

Many reasons. Motivation for one. Let's suppose Mr. Colvin has pro basketball aspirations. Scouts know that coaches generally don't bring this stuff out in public, so that if these attitude or work ethic type things do come out, it is probably a serious matter. The perception of a bad attitude could be the difference between Colvin getting drafted higher or lower, or getting drafted at all. Draft position = $$$. $$$ is often a pretty good motivator and incentive to straighten out. If you read scouting reports, attitude and work ethic are frequently mentioned.

Frankly, I never understand why people get upset when a coach calls someone out in public. A little accountability never hurt anyone.

This puzzles me too. I think the issue should be very easy to identify for an experienced coach. Not sure if all the player turnover has made Greg a little bit of a push over in the fear of upsetting his players.

But based on what I'm reading in calling out some players he may be revising his plan again. If it works, he will regain their trust as he make them more accountable potentially leading to more wins... which will fix the hard feelings. If it doesn't, Greg could be in severe trouble if his young talent leaves and future recruits don't like seeing more instability.

If it does work it saves his job, if it doesnt work well you know, back to the Valley for him.

Because he has softened up too much also. Where is the fire out of him? Where is the intensity? Where is the working of the officials, and getting all up in their grill? Why does he refuse to get technical fouls? Why does he just take things as they are given to him?

He is not the coach he was at UNI, ND, or Wayne State. Period. He has gone soft, as have his teams, and I don't see that changing.

ISU basketball looks like it did in the 70s. That is not a good thing.

Remember the teams of Orr, Floyd, LE, and Morgan even? They would fight you. This team? Not so much.

Duke looked very very good tonight. I liken them to a very very good mid major team who has an amazing coach, knows how to shoot and pass and are very disciplined. Not much of an inside game, but whatever.

Anyway, they're #5. We lost by 21, but I saw some good improvements from us today and some not so great things. Rebounding should be #1....I guarantee if we could rebound a lot of the shots we missed getting the rebound for when we shouldn't have....game would have been 10 point game at worst. In the end, they were knocking down most of their shots and there's not a lot you can do when that happens + they rebound everything.

I'm really not too upset. If this happened to Nebraska or something, i'd be a lot more ****** off

Except that scouts talk directly to coaches about a player's motivation and attitude, and Gmac could remind Colvin in a direct or indirect way about that.
No, I think it was entirely self-serving, in that Gmac wants the fans to know that it's not him, it's "these players" he has to deal with, and for us to see the obstacles in his way to build a successful program.
