No Counter Offer?

Which indicates to me that it was about more than money. If it is just about the money then you entertain all offers. I am really hoping it was money, but have a sinking feeling that it was not.

He may have quadrupled his salary - and you don't think it was about the money.

For those of us who don't follow wrestling, how good is Penn State? Compare their program to a football or basketball program to know exactly what he's doing here.

And could someone explain what Cael said in the interview shown at 10pm for those of us who were out Veisheaing? If Cael didn't let Iowa Stat even counter, it was definitely about Pollard, wasn't it?

Did Gable win the national title his first 3 years at Iowa?

If not 2 out of 3

Cael is the george raveling of wrestling.

ISU might win the whole thing next year because we have a real coach not just a recruiter.

A - He is losing to his in-state rival with equal talent. If you can't beat 'em - go to a smaller pond
B - PA has a lot of talent. I wonder if he looked at tOSU this year and thought he could do it with their kids. But, see A.
C - PSU has a much more financially sound athletic department.
D - IF his wrestlers win just a couple of their last day matches in the last two we have one if not two NC's in the last two year. (coaching)
E - If he takes any of ISU's recruits, then I think you see exactly what kind of person he is.

I wonder how much blame the Big XII conference deserves in this. I know that Cael made comments about not being fair to get his guys in the NCAA's, BUT he got all 10 wrestlers in the last two year. This conference seems to be set up to support traditional powers in MBB and FB on the backs of the other schools.

"He said the high school talent in Pennsylvania and surrounding states is the best in the country and the kids in that area grow up wanting to wrestle for the Nittany Lions."

That quote says a lot to me.

There is a lot of truth in that statement. Look where most of the 2009 All-Americans came from. 8 of the 10 champs were from the east coast. A lot of Iowans want to live in 1985 when it comes to wrestling. The simple fact is that PA, OH, NJ and several other eastern states have better high school wrestling than Iowa.

Cael leaving sucks. But, I do believe that this has more to do then just money. With money being #1 of course...

Counter offers taint a relationship. Employee feels they were short changed when they find out they are "worth more". Employers feel the someone is only staying because of money. Both sides feel used. Also, then every coach on the payroll knows how to get a healthy raise.

We will be just fine. Cael is not proven as a coach. He is still just a name. We had arguably more talent than anyone while he was here and only exceeded expectations once (getting 2nd in his first year). The other dozen times we met or fell short of expectations on the mat.

I'm not bummed and am excited to see what the new coach can do with the talent we have coming back.

That's the problem......I don't see a lot of the "talent" coming back next year.

I don't see our seniors leaving (other then Cyler). Even Reader I would be surprised when he knows the chance they have next year. That is a ton of talent and the potential to make a run at the NC again.

Now as far as the redshirts this year and the recruits coming in they may choose to leave. That is where the new coach will make a big difference.

Cael had never coached before.
3 season, 3 Conference Championships
NCAA finish: 2nd, 5th, 3rd.

I'd put that up against ANY coaching resume of a first 3-years guy.

Douglas' last 4 seasons
NO Conference Championships (5th, 3rd, 2nd, 4th) - he never got one in 13 seasons.
NCAA finish:19th, 6th, 10th, 13th

Not even LE can match that illustrious 3 year start - and he's coached before.

I agree to an extent but you also have to look at the talent Cael inherited the first year.

My concern with Cael is that for some reason in the past 2 years, he could not light a fire under the teams rear end when they needed it. Not saying he is a bad coach but he was definitely learning on the job.
