Don't buy it that Cael was afraid of being second fiddle to Iowa or anybody else. He'll have to deal with Iowa just as much or more at Penn State. And a team called Ohio State is now the first option for a lot of kids out east. No doubt that will now change because Cael's name alone brings in great recruits. I saw the Cael interview and I could just as easily surmise that he looked like a guy that wouln't say what he really wanted to say. One thing is for sure, he loves ISU and his leaving and the way it's happened is very strange.
I don't get that quote because if that was true then Penn State would have a good wrestling program ... I think Ballard could have beat Penn State last year.
I was thinking the same thing; it looked like he was holding back, not wanting to burn any bridges.
I don't think recruiting is Cael's problem. He was great why he was here, but he probably should have done even better, especially when everything was on the line at times. Not to take away from the championships he brought in, but I think his "coaching" was the weakest link in his chain. He simply can't get the guys to be focused and ready when it matters and I think that baffled him.
The problem I see is that Cael apparently thinks by going where the hotbed of recruiting is, he'll some how be able to get around that weak link and succeed where eh couldn't here. Unfortunately for him, that problem will always be there unless he remedies his own faults.

You know I was pretty level headed about this all day and then I watch the 10 pm news and suddenly I am more pissed then I have been in 10 yrs and it is 100% directed towards Sanderson.
I agree with a lot of this. Cael, like a lot of athletes at a high level, is VERY self-motivated. It's what drives him to succeed. Not everyone is like that, no matter how much talent they have. Motivating someone else is way different than motivating yourself. I think that's where Cael's biggest issues lie.
Michael Jordan coaching is much the same, I think.

Great post. He had problems getting his wrestlers to be agressive and get the mental part right for big meets.
Wrestling isn't the way it used to be with just the Iowa and Oklahoma schools dominating. There are closer to a dozen programs out there now with great programs, and finishing 5,2 and 3 in the nation during Cael's 3 years is no small accompllishment, especially when done with almost all underclassmen (all of which would be back next year, I hope). There's nothing wrong with Cael's coaching, he's had some bad breaks but again he's been working with very young wrestlers and all underclassmen. That would change for the first time next year with a senior dominated line-up and a great chance to win the national title. Something smells very bad here for Cael to leave that situation, especially without giving ISU a chance to counter offer.

NCAA finish: 2nd, 5th, 3rd.
I'd put that up against ANY coaching resume of a first 3-years guy.
Douglas' last 4 seasons
NO Conference Championships (5th, 3rd, 2nd, 4th) - he never got one in 13 seasons.
NCAA finish:19th, 6th, 10th, 13th
Not even LE can match that illustrious 3 year start - and he's coached before.
What I was saying is I think he missed a chance at two national titles in that time. I think he did great, but I think he would even agree they should have done better with the talent they had.
you do realize a Cyclone fan just said we probably should have won a NC rather than get a 2nd and 3rd.
This is the ONLY sport we can ever get so cocky about. We need it to be great.
I don't buy some people's argument that it's the Athletic Department's fault. He had everything he asked for here. Highest paid coach, a fan base that actually suppports wrestling, and it sounds like the facilities are fine.
If Cael loved ISU so much he should have spoke to the university administration if he had a problem with the the AD. He could have spoken with boosters who would have shaken things up. He should value the university and the fanbase enough to not let it come to this.
It sure seems like he made the move for the money and so he wouldn't have to play second fiddle in his own state anymore.

Does anyone know the exact reason for the leaving....no. Maybe there are more problems are known at this point. And I am getting sick fan talking smack about coaches or anyone for that matter because of the decision they make. Chizik, yes I can understand because of the things that he preached and said to the Cyclone nation. And now its Cael. A month ago he was in the hunt to bring a national title to Ames and now some people are saying he is the scumbag of the earth. You people need to get a life. He brought 3 straight Big 12 titles to Ames. How many other coaches can that? I'm not defending Cael by any means, cause being the big wrestling fan that i am this hurts really bad. But maybe there are more internal problems then we know of.
Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Gable take over the Iowa program when it wasn't anywhere near ISU in tradition and success and completely left ISU in the dust for the most part? Most people would have doubted he could do it that well, and for that long, going against such a powerhouse in ISU. He didn't let playing second fiddle for a year or two bother him. He kept at it, and never let that happen again.
I am thouroughly disappointed in Cael Sanderson. Don't kid yourselves, he had free reign in the AD and could do whatever he wanted and get whatever he wanted. At first I wanted to doubt JP too and hang the blame on him, instead of on Cael, a fellow Cyclone. While I don't think JP has handled many things perfect, hard to put the blame on him here. It seems to me that Cael took the coward's way out, and didn't even give ISU a chance to meet his needs or change his mind.
I really want to throw up about now. Damn it is hard to be a Cyclone fan. Luckily, I think our football team is gonna really surprise people and absolutely unload on the Hawks in Ames this fall. That is gonna have to carry through my summer. Oh, and a lot of drinking.
