NFL renews network deals nine years, says more Thursday games - NFL - CBSSports.com News, Rumors, Scores, Stats, Fantasy Advice

Not that exciting of a story. They're going to do more Thursday night games. That's cool. Here's the part I found interesting:

"NFL games account for 23 of the 25 most-watched programs among all television shows this fall and draw more than twice as many average viewers as broadcast prime-time shows."

That's a pretty amazing statistic. And it's also very telling. Despite the ill will created by the lockout. Despite the complaints from players/fans about the league's rules on helmet to helmet hits. Despite the calls that the league is turning it into flag football and ruining the game.

Despite all that, the NFL is stronger than it's ever been. Ratings are up. Money is up. People are watching. Consumers are consuming.

This is why guys like James Harrison and others who've complained about the direction the league is going. James can whine about new rules all he wants. He can stand firm, and keep playing the same way he always has. And if he does, the league is just going to roll right over him and not miss a beat. The only way the league slows down is if people stop watching, and it doesn't look like that's going to happen any time soon.

Thursday night football sucks, especially for those of us that do not get to see them.

Nice to see NBC will now broadcast the third Thanksgiving game instead of the NFL Network.

Agree completely. I'd rather see less Thursday night games and instead let Fox and CBS each do doubleheaders every Sunday instead of alternating.
