"Next" Saturday

Say today is Sunday, Jan 15th. What day is "next Saturday"

  • "This Saturday" and "Next Saturday" in this case are the same = Jan 21st

  • "This Saturday" = Jan 21st, "Next Saturday" = Jan 28th

Please help me settle an ongoing argument with my in-laws.

We're at the game last night (Tuesday) and the wife asks me something about what's going on "next Saturday". I say, "you mean 'this Saturday', right?" and we go down our standard argument about "this" vs "next" Saturday and her brother chimes in on her side to tell me what an idiot I am.

I'm not talking about "this coming Saturday" or any other qualifiers like that. Strictly, "next Saturday".

If we were sitting on Friday, then yes, logically I could see "this Saturday" would be the next day and "next Saturday" would be 8 days from now, but I'm talking the extreme case of today being a Sunday, so the closet Saturday is 6 days away.

To make matters worse, I think that "last" can also be used for Jan. 14th and Jan. 7th. The farther you get away from the 14th, the less appropriate it is to refer to the 7th as "last." Similarly, as someone posted, the farther you get away from the 14th, the less appropriate it is to refer to the 14th as "this."

If I think it won't be clear, I tend to say "this coming Saturday" or "this last Saturday." Or I may ask someone who says "this Saturday" whether they mean "this coming Saturday" or "this last Saturday."

Just like people who are in Iowa say they are going up to Missouri, down to Minnesota or somehow don't understand that going to Illinois or Nebraska is going over. My god, what are we teaching in our schools these days!

EDIT: To be clear Saturday or this Saturday is at the end of the week you are in. Next Saturday is at the end of the NEXT week and when you get past that then you have to start using 2 Saturday's from now or the date. I so declare this, make it so.

Here's the "It's not just my opinion", not just being a **** logic.

The definition of next:
next /nekst/
adjective
1. (of a time or season) coming immediately after the time of writing or speaking. "we'll go next year"
2. coming immediately after the present one in order, rank, or space. "the woman in the next room"

I would argue that #1 suggests that NEXT is not further in the future than immediately after the timeframe you're in. AND

I would argue that based on #2, we are in THIS room, the woman is in the next room. That means that not THIS room, but the room directly AFTER this room.

THIS Saturday is included in the present week (like the room). NEXT Saturday is included in the week following the present week.

Feel free to argue my point.

I've debated this with my wife so often. Hope she doesn't see what I voted for on here...

Far too many missed exits/mistimed weekend plans hinged on this very thing.

I agree that next Saturday is the one following this one, so next Saturday would be 1/21. BUT next exit is the one coming up, so don't miss it.

In the example given I'd probably say "next Saturday and 2 weeks from yesterday" to differentiate the 2 days?
 
35-25 against me so far? What the F is going on here?!?!?

I thought CF readers were mostly college educated, reasonable people. I'm gonna take **** for this for the next decade unless I get some help here.
