I can't be the only one who thinks ties in the NFL need to end. I'd love if the NFL took up an OT system like the on in college, but start the teams at the 50. Anyone have some other ideas? Games that go to OT normally are good games, and ending them in a tie is beyond stupid.

I'd rather if you reach the end of regulation at the end of OT, you flip a coin for possession for another OT quarter, sudden death period.

If tied after 15 minutes each team chooses 1 player to participate in a punt, pass & kick competition, points will be given for distance and accuracy.

Yeah it is stupid. In soccer they have a overtime period and if its still tied they do PK's. Why can the NFL do a 15 minute OT period then if it is stilled tied then you do something like the College FB OT. Can you tie in the playoffs?

obviously doesn't watch soccer

I prefer the college OT to the NFL's, but one thing I don't like about it is how much it overvalues kickers because teams start in FG range right off the bat.

I would prefer a system similar to college but where the starting position changes based on the OT period.

1st OT: Start at midfield
2nd: Start at the 35
3rd: Start at the 25 and have to go for two with TDs
4th: Start at the 15, must go for two with TDs, no field goals allowed
5th and on: Start at the 10, must go for two with TDs, no field goals allowed

I think an OT system like this with tiered starting positions would be an improvement for both NFL and college from their current systems.

World cup? I know you can tie or draw in soccer, but that was in pool play. In tourny play they have extra time and pk's. And if you want to play fifa later LMK.

Or just get rid of OT altogether and have the kickers go head-to-head against each other in a game of kicker H-O-R-S-E

"And that's 'S' for Gould! Walsh could win it here with a make and a resulting miss from Chicago. The Vikings lead the Bears, 'H-O' to 'H-O-R-S.'"

Uhhhh how could you possibly allow ties in the playoffs?

How could you possibly allow a tie in the regular season?

I don't like ties but I see the value in them. If both teams still have the same score after 75 minutes of football, it kind of makes sense to give them each "half a win" and "half a loss" as it's a better representation of what the game actually was.

Because it promotes different types of strategy, sometimes teams are evenly matched, it rewards the underdog/weaker team and punishes the favorite/stronger team, and most importantly, the regular season isn't single elimination.

And add in what cyfan61 said above. That was a good post

High School and college OT sucks. It takes elements of the game away.

I'd go back to Sudden Death and have the first score settle it like men

Worst idea ever. How are "elements of the game" not taken away when one team's offense and the other team's defense never even see the field?

How about a squad play special teams and defense?

The current OT is a compromise that is livable, but the high school and college rules are awful.

If two NFL teams can't find a winner after 75 minutes of colliding into each other then head for the showers.

With player safety such an issue the college and high school unlimited turn method is ridiculous.

The only truth to NFL OT is someone will complain every time
