New Orleans Hornets change name

Meh, we have a bunch of dumb team names in professional sports.

Off the top of my head:
Red Sox
White Sox
Browns
Packers
Royals
Athletic's
Pistons
Pacers
Heat
Clippers
Spurs
Nuggets

Also SuperSonics, but I always liked this name as a kid.

YOU TAKE THAT BACK RIGHT NOW!!!!

:pwink:

From the Wikipedia:

The Green Bay Packers were founded on August 11, 1919 by Curly Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun.[SUP][1][/SUP] Lambeau solicited funds for uniforms from his employer, the Indian Packing Company. He was given $500 for uniforms and equipment, on the condition that the team be named for its sponsor. Today, "Green Bay Packers" is the oldest team name still in use in the NFL.[SUP][2]

If you don't know the story, I can see how it seems like an odd name. Considering the story, I like the name...but I like the team too, so obviously I'm biased.[/SUP]

I am a Packers fan too. And even with the story it is still an odd name.

And I forgot about the Knicks. New York Knickerbockers

I don't think its stupid because other team names make more sense. I think its stupid because the hornets are a recognized name..been around since the 80s. From a brand stand point, I think this guy must have a screw loose. I don't see people going out and buying a new Pelicans jersey.

Yeah, it made sense when the Hornets were in Charlotte, which is no longer the case.

This is fitting — flag of Louisiana has a pelican on it.

People can hate the nickname itself, that's fine.

You know what's worse? Sticking to disconnected branding. Memphis Grizzlies, Utah Jazz, Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Lakers ...

OK, that last example has worked OK. :spinny:

The only way I can get on board with this is if the cheer leaders perform clumsy pelicans on the players at half time. Or maybe even pull a lucky fan out of the crowd to perform one on. Now that's entertainment!

I am OK with it as it does tie into a characteristic of the region. The New Orleans Jazz was a natural...too bad they didn't leave names behind like they do now because the NO Jazz was perfect!

The hornet name belongs in Charlotte. The hornet and the hornet's nest has been associated with Charlotte since the Revolution. I hope Charlotte can get the name back.
Pelicans? Meh. I think it will grow on people. I would think NO being such a unique city could have come up with something a little better....

They should call themselves the Jazz. Screw the old owners who moved to Utah. Nothing brings to mind jazz, good times, and great food like UTAH!

Good point. The Jazz came from New Orleans originally--If Utah had changed the name then they could be the Jazz once more.

They should've just left after Katrina. Hopefully Jordan changes the Bobcats to the Hornets and they get the old color scheme back.

They need a better name:

Wasps
Kush
Bayou Bunnies
Crickets
Swampdogs
Tombmeisters
Shrimps
