We are getting my daughter a laptop for her birthday. Suggestions?

Based on the amount of information given I'd say buy a pink one with a screen and a keyboard.

I 2nd the dell outlet. Same warranty on "refurbs" that you get on new. The refurbs arent necessarily remanufactured. Most are just open box returns.

I tend to stay away from recommending the throw away systems you can get at dirt cheap prices at local retailers.

Definitely Dell Outlet, make sure you watch for the 20-30 percent off coupons

Age of daughter? Regardless of what you get, if your daughter is under 12 years old keep her off of the stupid kid sites like Webkinz (if that's still a "thing") or where they can play online flash games. The amount of malware that gets onto the computer from those sites is insane. I had to wipe the hard drive three different times and start over because of how badly it bogged down the machine. We had bought her a Compaq for $350. It was a great laptop for about 6 months.

Get her a Macbook. During college/grad school I went through 3 different PCs. I have had my Macbook for 3 years now and have yet to have even a small problem.

Of course, it can't be related to how the PC's were treated in college and how the Macbook gets treated now that you're out...nope.

I'm in my 30s now and in college I was on Strangesearch a lot "perusing", and never burnt thru computers that fast.

I agree. Don't want to turn this into an apple vs. pc war, but I don't understand how people blow through computers so quickly. I've had machines for 8+ years with heavy use on them and they never 'die'. Usually I'm I choose to upgrade as processing speed/memory/etc has advanced so much over the 6-8 year lifespan, not because I've run them to death. I torrent and everything like a mofo on them as well.
