Never Saw That Coming...Basketball

Not sure about that but was at the MN ISU game in Minneapolis where MN threw it in and hit the scoreboard to help us win. Great game the MN lady ahead of me didn't like me whooping and hollering.

I would love to see that series restarted fun and convenient road trip for ISU fans.
I can't see Minny wanting to resume that series the way TJ is recruiting.

When Matty T. came into form his senior year it was more like a 'he's arrived' then 'out of nowhere'. Expectations iirc were huge for him coming out of high school and it took some time for him to just play and react instead of worrying about the next step.

Of note, he was the one player that looked like they knew he was in a one and done situation that awful March day in 2015, his sophomore year.

I saw Ejim play on Fred's first team over Thanksgiving weekend and his athleticism stood out, was just raw is all. That said I wouldn't have predicted he turn into what he did.
I agree with that on offense. What was shocking to me was the change in his defense.

Tyrus McGee. Unreal shooter.

So, give some love to an unheralded goofy white-boy transfer from Marquette.

He's the greatest shooter we've ever seen if the percent doesn't lie.

I can remember a few games where a 6' 5" guard was asked to play in the post. Didn't seem to bother him...Jeff Grayer scored and rebounded anywhere you put him.
ISU has had several undersize (height) players end up having to play in the post at times. A few I remember:
  • Ron Harris at 6'3" (might have been generous) guarding 6'9" Wayman Tisdale from Oklahoma.
  • Ron Virgil at 6'4" with some of the longest arms of someone that height, playing against Roy Tarpley in an NCAA game.
  • Kenny Pratt, listed at 6'5" but likely closer to 6'3" could find ways to get his shot off and in among the trees in the paint on offense. For all the trouble he was in, it was nice to see that he came back years later and finished his ISU degree.
  • Stevie Johnson came to ISU as a high scoring SG or SF, ended up using his hops to play PF on the Fizer team.
  • Deonte Burton was fairly short for a forward, but was thick so could bang with the bigs and had incredible hops.
  • Of course Grayer could have played just about any position on the floor. Dude could get up! If I remember correctly, there was a game when a Nebraska player tried to get Hornacek in a fight, Grayer stepped in and took care of business. He was so shy off the court, but not on it! Had a 10 year NBA career that would have been even better but for the knee injury.

Stats do lie. You have to consider the types of shots being taken. All of them were great shooters, but McGee's degree of difficulty was considerably higher than Christopherson's. And I'd put Sullivan up there for degree of difficulty and volume. Stat dorks are the worst.

For all of his great 3 PT shots, I will most remember him kissing the Cy logo in the middle of the Hilton floor after his last game.

Hey, I love all those guys! Tyrus is the best shooter that's ever put on an ISU uniform. His degree of difficulty is insane, and # of makes plus % made his senior year are just unreal.

Dedric WIlloughby is second.

Tyrus and Cedric, now that we are talking about them, I would love to see them again! Do-over time.

What can you add about Jeff Grayer! Incredible player, and great from the git go as a freshman. We had a thread not to long ago, about the greatest Cyclone player, and he got a lot of votes. He'd probably get mine if you held a gun to my head. Definitely top 3 all-time!

The thing about Tyrus was he was okay not starting. He could come off the bench and start firing, accurately, immediately. They used to call Vinnie Johnson the microwave but that could have been Tyrus as well as it didn't take either of them long to heat up. You mention degree of difficulty on his shots--I remember one game where he was basically almost horizontal in the air and made a three on a crazy difficult shot. And his hustle for loose balls was so outstanding.

Sill love the Niang interview media quote from that year. " We don't take a lot of BAD shots, but when we do... Tyrus makes em".

NWB averaged less than a point per game at Arkansas and played 4 minutes per game. By the end of his career he averaged 9,5, and 4. And led a tournament team in minutes played.
