I posted in the first one, but thought it might get lost. Curious as its a different situation, but want to maximize my initial starting salary without them walking away.

Within the last year I lost a dream job. Took a job that is alright to pay the bills with the thought I would keep looking. Just got offered a way better work/life balance job for 10k base more a year. (The 10 k i would have made in overtime). So again a wash except work/life balance.

They also offered a 10 k signing bonus which I could use as im looking at different vehicles.

Looking for thoughts to ask for potentially a little more. Pretty sure i want to take it, but why not maximize what I can get if I can

Trade the signing bonus for salary increase. Or half and half, something like that.

Never hurts to just ask for 2 or 3k more either. Just say "had hoped to make" that number. They might go for it. Doesnt hurt to ask. Anywhere that would walk away from a hire over 2k, you dont want to work there.

Not sure many read this thread, but I just asked if we could explore a slightly higher starting salary, 5k more in an email back to them after they sent the official offer.

Now I play the waiting game

You're negotiating from a position of strength.

Enjoy the ride.

They called this morning offering 2k more still will full signing bonus. I think Im just going to accept. Its not much, but more than I would have had if I didn't ask

The thing about negotiating salary is that you need to set your range at the beginning of the conversation. I always ask when a recruiter reaches out to me what their budget is for the role. If they ask me what I am looking for, I always provide a relatively big range (anywhere between 10-20k range), to give myself room to negotiate. Usually when I give my range, I set my target at the 33 percentile in the range.

sorry to be "that guy" but if 2k or 10k matters to you, don't blow it on a new vehicle.

congrats on the new job.

(now I will duck and head for cover)

It doesn't really matter, but would you rather have $40 extra dollars a week? Because that's what that one simple email that got me 2 k more boils down to basically.

Generally from my experience there is always a 10% wiggle room in negotiating a salary, if they off 50K counter with 55k and they will almost always accept.
