There might be some salvation for the "crab dribble" after all.

In response to increased scrutiny in recent years, the NBA is examining rewriting its traveling rules as soon as next season. It may include allowing for two steps, not one as currently written, and possibly even a provision for LeBron James' famous, or infamous, depending on your perspective, crab-dribble move.

"We're working on it," Joe Borgia, NBA's vice president of referee operations, told the ESPN.com blog Truehoop recently.

"Our traveling rule we've been discussing for a couple of years," he said. "The game has evolved. I don't think the rule has evolved since the time of Bob Cousy. But we're also going to probably share it with the NCAA and maybe FIBA, because it would be nice if we could all come up with a similar rule. A similar rule would be great for the players, the coaches, and the officials."

Not sure if its a good thing to do or not

What? Really? I would have thought it was written to allow 4 or 5 right now.

Nobody has been whistled for it since the time of Bob Cousy either...

Atleast then when a guy takes 5 steps they can say it's the rule. Although they could be more specific, Lebron, Kobe, CP3, Wade etc. all can take as many steps as they like, everyone else must remain stationary.

This will end up just like speed limits. Give people 55 and they go 65. Give em 65 and they go 75. Give em 1 step they take 3, give em 2, they'll take 6. Some of these guys won't have to dribble from the half court line to when they take off for the dunk.

And lol on the crab dribble, what makes it a crab dribble? The way he's bouncing the ball or the fact that he takes 3 steps after he stops dribbling? I do like Rose's call though, "The crab dribble has nothing to do with the three steps he takes"

If anything I think the NBA needs to help the defense more than anything. I can't stand watching the NBA. It's all one-on-one and who can score points.

Rules will always be made to promote offense, not defense. The last thing they want is the NBA to look like Big Ten basketball.

There's a travelling rule in the NBA?

Last year, My dad was in the hospital recovering from bypass surgery. We were watching TV and happened to come across the NBA playoffs. Now I can't say when the last time he saw a basketball game but I would guess decades. Within a minute or 2 he asked me "why aren't they calling traveling"?

And I have no idea what a "crab dribble" is

Wait, let me get this straight. They think the current travelling rule needs to be relaxed? Is this because they don't call it now, so technically they'll be making their referees slightly less inept? I guess it's easier to give up on the rules rather than find refs who bother enforcing them.

Totally agreee HOTDON and you know that if they allow 3 steps others will allow them to have 3. Some people can take almost 2 steps and be from the 3pt line to the hoop

Atleast the NBA is finally realizing that they're a joke and might as well just get rid of the rules. How long until they rename to the XNBA and we just get full contact?

I'd actually probably watch more NBA if teams played defense.

Did you watch in the mid 1990's through mid 2000's? That was pretty much an all-defense decade.

If college athletes had the ability to score at will, say like Kobe, they'd all be doing it too, and the coaches would be right there applauding them for it...

I'm a Lakers fan, and I primarily only watch them, but I find them thoroughly entertaining to watch. Lots of passing, and Kobe making ridiculous shots game in and game out.
