Looking for PIG FACILITIES near Ames

I'm moving to Ames in June to start my Ph.D. I did my B.S. at ISU, but moved out of state to work on my masters. Now, I'm coming back and can't wait. I can't wait for nice traffic and to see what Hoiberg can do!

Now, my request, or lookin for, is this. I am a big fan of raising pigs, as that is what I have done my whole life, but my family got out of the business recently and I am looking for a place near ames to raise a few pigs. If anyone has any possibilities or knows of anyone who would like to help a young grad student out, please let me know (pm me or write on here).

P.S. (I'm getting married soon, and would like a refuge from the wife, haha jk)

Thanks. Go Clones.

Maybe put up something on Craigslist or a local newspaper?

Been there done that. I thought my fellow cyclones and farmers (I know there are a bunch of us) would stand a better chance of helping me out. Thanks for the suggestion.

What exactly are you looking for? Just some land? Buildings? Or are you looking for a farmer that will let you raise your pigs with his?

You should go talk to the bar manager of Outlaws, they always have there fair share of pigs running around on the weekends, I'm sure they wouldn't mind a few more

My preference would be some empty buildings to put pigs in, but that is tough to find. If someone with pigs would allow me to run a few with theirs in return for some free labor that would be great too.

How many is a few? I have some friends who raise pigs. They want to know how many and what type of facility you are wanting?

I don't know anything about pigs just trying to help out another fanatic.

What about the empty buildings where they found that Lacina kid? Could you lease them from ISU? Not sure about having pigs that close to the fraternities though:wink:

How many head are you thinking? Indoors, outdoors, pasture, feedlot? Year round or just the warmer months? Are you looking to live on an acreage or just come out to work? And how far from Ames are you willing to travel?

Iowa State won't allow any non-university animals on the property due to liability issues.

I'm open to any types of facilities, indoor, outdoor, and even pasture. Nothing fancy. I grew up raising pigs on the dirt. I'm looking to have 3-5 sows, and finish the pigs that they raise. Would like to go year round if possible.

I recently signed a lease in town, but would love to have an acreage that would allow me to have pigs nearby so I wouldn't have to drive that far everyday to do chores.

I build grain bins with a guy off of Hwy17 and E18. He knows a lot of people in the area and I'll ask him if anybody has any facilities or space they aren't using right now that he knows. Might take a few days though.

I would go to Craigslist and have the title looking to rent a hog lot.
