Moving a garage?

Have a decent 2 car garage, but need to have more garage space. Unfortunately, the way the backyard is set up the existing garage blocks off access to the entire backyard where you would build a 2nd garage.

Has anyone ever moved a garage or other building? How tough? Cost? We'd have to pour new cement under it, or before moving it.

Alternately, anyone have a 4 car tandem garage? How useful / annoying are they?
 
What are you looking to house in the extra garage space? If you're wanting to park a hobby car (non daily driver) or a boat, or convert some extra space into a workshop, I'd think extending the existing structure would be most cost effective. Our house now is effectively a 3 car garage with tandem parking in one half - house the boat and our two daily drivers in there comfortably.
 
Well, between us we have 4 cars and 2 cycles. There's no "hobby" car, I have a convertible which I drive as often as possible, but never everyday for months at a time. So tandem doesn't seem workable.

Mostly I am curious if moving a garage ~40 feet costs $500 or $50,000 or somewhere in between...
 
We looked at a house that was 3 cars wide, and the third stall was double deep, for a total of 4 cars.

That's been nearly 10 years ago and I still think about that garage. It wouldn't be very practical to put 4 cars in, but it'd be fantastic for a shop space.

I’ve been married for 21 years and have parked inside for 6 months total with 2 or more garage spaces all but the first year. So do what I do, park in the street. I don’t even get to park in the driveway now due to kids.

Moving it would probably be pricey.

Do you have enough room in your yard to build a 3 car garage? That way, you could add a garage door to the backside of your existing garage and use that as a sort of pass-through to get from the driveway through to the new garage space behind the existing garage.
 
I have priced moving a 24X32 garage and the quote was $2200. That's for moving it 2 miles without having any overhead wires being moved or having an escort. You'd want to have your concrete pad in place before the move. The variables are 1) how far you'd move it, 2) if the structure is tall enough where you'd have to have overhead wires lifted, and 3) the L x W dimensions.

lol I have a 40 x 42 garage but we don't park our cars in there (unless it's dangerous cold or hail), it is houses the racecar and lawn mower.

Based on that, I would guess I am looking at under $2000, since it is just being moved like 40 feet. Wish the fools would have put it further back in the first place, but I am sure they wanted it close to house...

It's been many moons ago....just out of school...but dad and I moved the garage from one slab to another by rolling it over old telephone poles. Just cut the bolts from the plates on the old slab...nailed up cross members over the opening and pulled it onto the poles. And as it moved I would grab the last pole(cut to length) and move it to the front so it would keep moving. Lot of work, but worked like a charm. I guess the questions for you would be...is there room in your yard to even try this, do you have access to a log chain and tractor, and can you even get posts like that anymore? We lived on a farm and like most old farms had everything right there. If you have the room, the machinery and can get the posts....this might do it.

That is far more common than not. The question is whether or not you've priced a second building to park in yet.

This is exactly what I have. The Fairlane (Avatar) and Van I use very rarely) are in the tandem. Sometime it's a pain, but not bad if the one in the back is not used often (and the one in the front is reliable enough to ensure you can move it when you need to get the back one out. Unfortunately when it was built the contractor put an 8' door on it when I specifically said I needed a 9' wide door. The van BARELY fits if I fold the mirrors in.

Our lawnmowers are in one of the 45x90 sheds we have. The pickup I’m not driving stays in there. Those aren’t on the same property as our house.
 
Just put another garage door at the back of your existing garage allowing you to drive through it to your new garage. Problem solved. You're welcome.

No we have not. 1) I don't feel a need for something to park the cars in, they are perfectly fine outside and 2) I don't have a convenient place right next to the house to put one.
