Movie Talk Time: Beverly Hills Cop Axel F

Excuse me, my dear sweet brother Numsie -- but The Golden Child was great! Agree no need for a sequel though...

Man, peak Eddie Murphy was incredible, you almost forget how great he was.
I know you can't retroactively criticize special effects, but try watching the final battle scene now. It was like Eddie was fighting the Black Beast of Aaaarrgghh from the Holy Grail.

Peak Eddie Murphy was great and the OG Beverly Hills Cop was probably the greatest vehicle for his abilities. He appeared to be funny without even trying and all of the jokes played out as planned.

After Coming to America Eddie changed. Part of that was due to ****** movie selections...bad scripts and directors. But at some point Eddie appeared to have to TRY to be funny and once that happened he wasn't. He had the occasional good movie...the Nutty Professor and Shrek but most of his other movies were trash.

I feel this will go the way of Coming 2 America...an epic piece of trash I was able to stomach for 15 minutes. All of the characters are back but all of the actors try to hard to be what the characters were and it fails miserably. Add in subpar direction and comically bad scripts it's likely to be a complete disaster.

I'll let others test the waters first. If it sounds like I'm wrong I'll give it a go. If my thoughts largely sound correct I'll save myself the misery I suffered with Coming 2 America. Possibly the worst 15 minutes to start a movie I've endured. Right up there with Freddie Got Fingered and District 8.

I can’t take credit for this, but on the Rewatchables podcast for the original Beverly Hills Cop, they called out how QUIET Eddie was in the movie. It’s a pretty restrained performance, and I wonder if that’s some of the magic.

I worked at Adventureland in the 90s in the games department and there was game where you launched frogs at lillypads and tried to get them in the flower to win prizes. I don't know why, but for some reason they played the Beverly Hills Cop theme song at that game on a continuous loop. One shift at that game and you never wanted to hear that damn song again.

Eddie Murphy was box office gold back in the 80s. Then he decided he wanted to write and produce and he got away from what he was best at, just being funny.
