The monthly "Coach Talk With Greg McDermott" luncheon was today at the Memorial Union. Since I work on campus, I try to go to the Coach McDermott/Fennelly lunches. Coach McDermott was not able to attend today as he is out on a recruiting trip, so Jeff Rutter, one of the assistant coaches, came and spoke instead. Jeff brought Craig Brackins along which was a lot of fun. Craig has a good sense of humor and seems like a really nice guy.
Someone asked Craig how Craig's knee is holding up (after the surgery?) and Craig said that other than some mild soreness or achiness from time to time, his knee is doing well.
A lot of the lunch hour was spent recapping December's games and the conference schedule so far. Obviously, there have been some ups and downs, but the coaches are seeing improvement as the season goes on.
I think that this was mentioned already on CF, but Wesley is day to day so they do not currently know if he will play on Saturday at Nebraska. From the sound of it, Wesley actually ran up and down the court a couple of times after hurting his foot/ankle before the trainers pulled him out. He apparently did not want to come out and wanted to continue playing, but after the trainers looked at his foot/ankle in the locker room, they decided it would be better for Wesley to not return to the game.
A fan asked about the recruits coming in next season and Coach Rutter said that the coaching staff is very excited about the new additions to the team. Apparently the player out of Michigan is considered the best point guard (or maybe it was player) in the state (of Michigan). It sounds like at least a couple of the recruits should be serious threats from outside of the perimeter.
Craig briefly talked about playing prep basketball at Chicago and out in New Hampshire. It sounds like the place in New Hampshire is "resort" like in its environment.
A comment and question were made and asked about Rahshon. A fan spoke of the appreciation that he/ISU fans have for Rahshon having chosen to stay at ISU after the coaching change. The fan asked about the impact that Rahshon has had on the team and freshman having played at Iowa State for four years and having been through a coaching change. Both Craig and Coach Rutter said that Rahshon's leadership and experience have been very important to the team and freshman and that the way he plays hard day in and day out on the court is a model for the younger players.
Coach Rutter also reminded everyone that the WBB team plays Colorado at Hilton tonight at 7PM.
I wish I remembered more of what was said, but I forgot to take notes. I believe that the next "Coach Talk With Greg McDermott" is on Tuesday, February 19th, from Noon - 1PM in the Memorial Union Sun Room.
The February "Coach Talk With Bill Fennelly" is next Tuesday, the 5th, from Noon - 1PM in the MU Sun Room as well.
