MLB to expand instant replay in 2014

Did they get rid of umpires guessing at what's a strike and what's a ball? Or umps just being generally insufferable little children when anyone complains about one of their calls?

MLB expands instant replay in 2014 to include manager video challenges - ESPN

Not only did they fix it, they FIXED it. There are aspects about it that I actually like better than the NFL's replay (particularly keeping your challenge if you win it).

If by "FIXED it" you mean completely screwed the pooch, I agree.

They picked the most convoluted, inefficient, time-consuming way possible to do it. And that's after dragging their feet for years because they didn't want to "slow down the game even more."

Lemme guess - you're one of those "human element" nutters. Guess what - the human element stinks.

That's your second complete whiff in this thread.

How about, get the damn call right. Have an ump in the booth and review it as needed. Any "replay" system based on challenges is flawed and nothing more than a gimmick.

Don't turn it into this shell game of we're only going to get the calls right if the manager plays his cards right.

It ain't about getting the calls right at that point. It's a sideshow.

This always bothered me about football, yeah you get an extra challenge if you get both right, but after that you're just **** out of luck if the ref screws up?

Exactly. Works just fine to have a guy in the booth decide in college football.

They still sometimes screw up the call (which is independent of the decision to review process), but rarely are plays not reviewed that need to be.

Jdogg's "Fixed" Replay System
1. Umpire makes questionable call.
2. Manager runs back into clubhouse to try to catch a conclusive replay on TV and then run back out to "file challenge" before the next pitch is thrown.
3. Next batter stalls, steps out, adjusts cup, so manager can waddle back out from clubhouse.
4. Manager then weighs whether its worth it to risk challenge on this play, or if the challenge should be saved for later.
5. First base coach gives sign to batter to quit stalling, manager has decided not to challenge.
6. Joe Buck carries on about call (correct or otherwise) for next 4 innings.

Real Replay
1. Ump makes questionable call.
2. Another ump in the booth, with video truck, replays and dedicated monitor at disposal double checks call.
3. Ump in booth buzzes if call is wrong or needs closer look.
Done.

Thank god. Baseball was getting a little too fast paced. Glad they'll be slowing it down a tad with a few instant replay breaks.
