Missing F-35

IFE is In Flight Emergency. It's been posted on many articles that it was a "mishap" and that makes me believe it was either a bird strike, pilot error, or an aircraft component malfunction. The latter being unlikely, but it happens. Anything manmade breaks. It's not like a car where you get a flat tire that you can just pull over on the side of the road. If things fail midair your options of recovering an aircraft intact plummet dramatically if it's a critical failure. They've been pretty tight lipped about it until all the facts have been fully investigated, which is normal. I have no doubt the pilot went though his checklist to exhaust all options. Last resort is bailing out and finding a spot for the aircraft to hit the ground. It was a good thing it was in a woods and not on someone's house or in the middle of town. That said, an F-35 is capable of landing on a long road. Norwegian F-35s just did it.
