Misc: Minnesota Vikings Draft Pick

Vikes have been pretty open about this pick. They announced their "final three" as Kalil, Morris Claiborne from LSU, and Justin Blackmon. I still think they want a trade but if that doesn't happen it should be Kalil for them

Ideal situation that actual has a chance of happening: Swap #3 for Tampa Bay's #5. The trade value chart estimates Minnesota would get a 2nd rounder and Tampa would get Minnesota's 5th rounder. Tampa Bay would make sure they got Trent Richardson before the Browns could and Minnesota is guaranteed to get Kalil or Claiborne. They are also guaranteed to get their choice of Kalil or Claiborne unless someone trades up with Cleveland for Kalil, because the Browns don't really need either player.

If they stay at #3 it's Claiborne or Kalil and I don't care which although common sense seems to say Kalil so they can move Charlie Johnson to guard and improve the LT and LG spots in one swoop. Especially since the Cover 2 defense doesn't require a lot of man to man coverage, which is what you pay elite corners for. Claiborne is also not especially strong in run support, which is a big deal for a Cover 2 corner. That being said he would be great to have covering Calvin Johnson, Greg Jennings, and Brandon Marshall.

Kalil has to be the pick here! It's a quarterback league and if he is getting sacked all the time you won't be successful.

Great lineman don't hit free agency while corners do every year.

I hope they get a wideout with the second rounder like an Alshon Jeffrey or go with the top available corner.

This is really my ideal situation as well. Except if you trade down and get a 2nd you can pick BPA for 2/3 of the big WRs, CBs, or Safties. The Vikings are making it really obvious that they are going to take a safety early and play him if they have any choice about it.

I'm just hoping that Tampa Bay really wants Richardson, and they are worried enough that the Browns want him as well.

Kalil isn't the glamour pick, but he is a must. He can be our OT for the next 10 years. Especially with the loss of Hutch, out line needs a boost.

Kalil must be our pick if we don't trade back. If we are still top 5 with a trade it better still be Kalil. Blackmon is a sexy pick because he is a reciever. Kalil would be a great guy to have on the line to protect Ponder.

They need Kalil, you can't afford to not protect a young QB. If they could trade down and get him at 5 that would be ideal. There are a lot of holes on this team and more draft picks can only help.

+1

With Hutch no longer on the team and the rest of our O-Line either aging or inept, QB protection should be the main concern going forward. Ponder needs more time to pass, AP needs holes to be created for him to run through. IMO, Ponder will have a better year passing and making decisions if he has adequate or better line blocking.

Outside of that, Claiborne is my #2, Blackmon at #3. I would love to have a legit deep threat at WR, but the CB position has severely lacked for many years.

I wouldn't think they could screw up the first pick, but then again it is the Vikings, and sometimes I Ponder what they are doing.

Even if they are smart with their first pick they are garenteed to windmill one of their next few.

I see what you did there.

Alas, as a lifelong Vikings fan I can see them buggering this up.

I say Kalil without a doubt. If they take Kalil with their first round pick, there will still be plenty of talented receivers and corners available when they pick again at 35. But, if they go with a WR/CB at number 3, will there be a starting caliber left tackle available at 35? Not nearly as likely.

They will trade with Tampa Bay for that deal if they can. Move back 2 spots and pick up a 2nd rounder. Cleveland could take Tannehill and you still end up with Kalil. Vikings are sitting real good. Of course it is the Vikings. They could screw around and not get a deal done and have the next two teams submit picks while they are sitting on the phone. A firm deadline must be in place so they have plenty of time.

I think you have to analyze what you can get later in the position you didn't take in the first round. So would you rather have Mike Adams and Claiborne or would you rather have Matt Kallil and Jannoris Jenkins (likely the top CB left after round one). I sort of lean toward Adams and Claiborne. I think it's harder to find top CB talent than it is to find top LT talent.
