ESPN - Brewers manager Yost on Sabathia: 'A rumor's a rumor' - MLB

Buster Olney was just on Sports Center. He said he has spoken to executives that believe he will end up with the Brewers, and that he has pitched his last game for Cleveland.

The main player being talked about that would be sent to the Tribe is Matt LaPorta. In my opinion, I don't think this is wise for Milwaukee, as I think they would still need more help (bullpen for sure) to put them over the top. However, assuming Sheets can stay healthy, this would make Milwaukee very dangerous in a 5 game series, if they're able to make it to the playoffs. Should be interesting.

5 maybe?

Yeah, my fault. A series in which you only have to win 3 games, and you have C.C. and Sheets going in the first two.
I figured that's what you meant, but then you mentioned the playoffs afterwards and that's what foncused me.

I think that moving Dave Bush or even Seth McClung from starter to bullpen would strengthen their pen (Heck, even Suppan could be moved - he has been inconsistent as a starter). If they pick up CC, they have flexibility to shift pitchers from starter to bullpen & we all know that Sheets is not the most reliable when it comes to completing a season. If Sheets were to go down (knock on wood - I hope not), and McClung & Bush pitch as well as they have recently, CC could hopefully fill in well for Sheets. If Sheets stays healthy, well, I would think that that would be a very good 1-2 punch!! I actually am excited about this move! (But I do agree, MWITT, that the Brewers are still inconsistent with the bullpen- I want them to get rid of Mota so badly!)

I'll concede that the Crew's bullpen is horrid. They need major help there.

Remember, though, Sheets is a free agent after the season is over. I put odds on him going elsewhere. Acquiring CC is a great insurance policy if he leaves.

That's basically what the Cubs did in 2003. They weren't overly strong (see win % in the regular season), but in the playoffs with Wood and Prior (and a young Zambrano), they were tough.

It isn't for insurance when Sheets leaves. It would be to go for the pennant in 2008. Milwaukee would have a better chance at keeping Sheets than Sabathia.

The thing that people need to remember is that if the Brewers get CC and both he and sheets leave, they will have 4 extra first round picks in the next draft. This would allow them to restock thier farms. Also if they trade Matt Laporta, then they need to make resigning Fielder a priority.

I hope that we get him. I think that the brewers are within easy striking distance of both the cards and cubs.

It depends on what the teams record is that signs him if it is a first pick or not.

Is LaPorta projected as a 1B in MLB? I know he's been playing RF in AA. And I don't like Milwaukee's chances of signing Prince after they lose control of him, as he was already unhappy about his contract.

The Brewers have a lot of minor league talent right now. Baseball America named it's Minor League All Star team this week and the Brewers had the top player at 3 of the 8 positions.
LaPorta at OF, Gamel at 3B and Escobar at SS.
