For those that think there is competition for the starting quarterback spot, I went to the scrimmage on Saturday and based on the one day I saw, Meyer is safe as the starting quarterback.

Arnaud looks big and strong, but clearly has much to learn on the fundamentals of when to throw the ball away etc. Some of his decisions looked pretty bad from my vantage point.

Overall I was happy with what I saw, but the offensive line is going to need help from some people coming in this fall.

It will be fun to see how they develop. This was my first practice this year and the pace of practice and intensity is much higher than the last few years I have been observing practices. The coaches are very aggressive and expect the same of the players.

When you say fundamentals, I think of footwork, release, etc. When looking at that, I think Arnaud is better.

Now, when talking about decision making (when to throw it away as you mentioned), Meyer is clearly better. He should be, he's the senior.

I have seen posts with the thought that Arnaud was going to press Meyer this year. Based on what I saw Saturday it is not very close. I am not sure either one of them are where the current coaching staff want them to be.

I have not coached football so I go mainly on the decisions they make and not the pure fundamentals.

They both have work to do. The new offense is 3 step no hitch, 5 step 1 hitch maybe 2 on a curl or something. Only 2 hitches on 7 step also. More than two hitches will not be allowed, you tuck it and get to the LOS or throw it to your Mom in the front row. If you watched Brett last year his feet were sort of happy. A large portion of sacks from last year will not happen in this offense because of the way the QB's are being coached. There will not be many reads. It is Primary to 1 check down. The 3 or 4 read check down is not going to happen. Whatever guy responds best to the new style, squares his footwork will be they guy. In the practice I saw, I think it is close.

Exactly unibob00. While Meyer is working on improving the fundamentals (eliminating the unnecessary hitches), Arnaud seems to do well at those.

However, while Arnaud struggles with making the right decisions, Meyer does well there.

I feel rather confident that Meyer will be our starter, yet the gap is not as wide as some may think.

While Coach Chizik says it is wide open, it would be very tough for him to go with Arnad ahead of Meyer in my view. Meyer has been a leader on the team, has a strong reputation and game experience. It's easy to say all spots are up for grabs to make everyone work, but I just can't see a senario where Arnad steps ahead of Meyer to start the season unless there is a injury or Meyer simply looks terrible.

Not sure who is more fundamentally sound in practice..true test is when you have a bunch of 300lb defensive linemen trying to kill you. That's where Meyer's experience hopefully gives him an edge. If not, we're in trouble.

I hope both Meyer and Blythe can help carry the load, but Arnad should get work as well.

It's easy to see when you watch how both QB's take a snap, drop back, how quickly they get rid of the ball, etc - that Arnaud has better fundamentals. Just by nature Arnaud doesn't take those extra hitches and hop steps. Meyer is still working to get rid of that as well as take the correct steps when dropping back (no false step, etc).

It will be interesting to see how fundamentally sound Arnaud is when he's got defenders flying in his face, as ketelmeister stated.

I love Bret and think his senior year will be his best, especially with how our new QB coach is meticulously watching his every move. I'm also very high on Arnaud and what type of player he'll be for ISU someday.

Has Bates officially switched positions or is he still in the debate for QB in the future?

Oh no, he's still a QB. He's just not being discussed at this point because he won't arrive in Ames until the fall. If he's better than Arnaud - then wow...I tip my hat to him.

Fan22, Great to hear Arnad is looking so good. It would be nice if he could work his way in slowly this year to keep his confidence. However, if Meyer doesn't do the job, or we lose early, I'd be ready to look to the future. Not easy to play as a freshman, but he has had the luxury of a redshirt year to watch and get bigger and hopefully faster. I too wonder if he's the future or if Bates figures in. In the videos, Bates looks strong and fast.

I wonder if we'll see a little Tim Tebow type stuff this year or in the future with Bates and Arnaud? Arnaud seems to have better fundamentals and stronger arm, but Bates is quicker and more athletic based on what I saw in the videos.

i think people need to wait to say who is better at this and that until fall practices start, i am not going to say who i think is better at one thing, because they both have their strenths and weaknesses
but all i am going to do is remind everyone
new coaches
new systems
new ways of doing things (such as fundamentals)
all i am saying is i do not think we should get ahead of ourselves with spring ball
Austen is a RS freshmen
Brett is a RS Senior
enough said

I agree CMoore, it is Myers' job to lose... I am happy that the backup is sound. When the chips are down it is the fundamentals that do not allow a QB to lose a game for you. If Brett would go get dinged, the next guy in will be sound. Brett is such a good athlete I am confident he will adjust to the new expectations placed on him. I just think the gap between the two may not be as wide as you would expect considering the experience, and that is a good thing, not a slam against Brett by any means.
