Messi says he's done with Argentina

Obviously, you can't take anything he says right after the game as gospel. It's just too raw. But it does show the amount of pressure the guy is under. When you have Maradona saying crap like if you don't win the final don't bother coming back to the country and much of the country agrees with him, I don't know that I'd blame the guy for passing on international soccer for the rest of his career.
As much as I like that soccer is growing here in the US, I hope it never becomes what it is in South America. I mean, Argentina's treatment of Messi should surprise no one. Look what Colombians did after we beat them in 1994.
Sad if true, but I completely understand why he would never want to put himself through that again.
They were saying on Mike and Mike this morning his comments were largely due to what you guys alluded to. Poor treatment of players and the corruption of Argentina soccer tied to FIFA corruption. I hope he does play again because even though he was beating down the US last week, he was a treat to watch.

Seems like a combo of:
(1) As he says, feels done after 4 final-game losses, why do again in 2 years at WC?
(2) He knows he's entering his 30s, wants to do Club only instead of both as gets older.
(3) He already has the national team goal record.
(4) As the article describes, he's been in Spain since he was 13. More than half his life. Spanish/Catalans think he is Argentinian foreigner...Argentinians regard him as a Spanish-Argentinian outsider. He chose to play national team at Arg instead of Spain (he had option). "Fine, adios amigos."

Reminds me a bit of Cleveland Cavs fans 6 years ago, except it seems like they Argentine fans never cherished him from the start so I don't feel bad for them like I did for Cavs fans (until this year).
Also, I guess I'm surprised not winning this tournament is all that big of deal. It's not like the World cup, or even the Euros where it's stacked with tough competition. Aside from Brazil, who historically is any good in this tournament? I suppose that may make it even more inexplicable that they didn't win won, but can you imagine claiming Lebron's imagine is ruined if he never won a FIBA Championship or Olympic gold?
Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Peru, Colombia, Mexico. It's basically this tournament, which is the de facto South American championship, and the World Cup.
With up to 8 guys now including Messi saying they will no longer play the national team this seems like some sort of ploy against the AFA to gain leverage for treatment of the players.

Pretty sure Chile and Colombia are both ranked in the top 5-6 in the world, along with Argentina being #1. It wasn't much of an upset that Chile won. Brazil is actually down.
I thought that call he drew that was the second yellow card on the defender was bull crap and anyone who isn't a household name doesn't draw a yellow card for that. Defender is entitled to his space and Messi simply plowed into him. I wasn't at all upset when Messi got a yellow of his own later in the game for his blatant dive.
That being said, he is lightning quick, an incredible ball handler and probably one of the best ever in creating a shot and getting it off among multiple defenders or passing out of the same pressure. Incredible talent, right there.
